Bernanke Cancels Jackson Hole Appearance Four Months Out Due To 'Personal Scheduling Conflict'

April 22, 2013

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke won't be attending the annual Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium in August due to a "personal scheduling conflict."

The event, held by the Kansas City Fed every summer in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, usually features a keynote speech from the Chairman of the Fed.

In recent years since the financial crisis of 2008, the speech has been used to signal important monetary policy shifts as the Fed has experimented with unconventional monetary policy tools.

As MNI's Steven Beckner points out, ECB President Mario Draghi broke tradition when he skipped the meeting last year in order to put the finishing touches on the ECB's "OMT" bond buying program, which was unveiled shortly thereafter.

However, given that the symposium is a Fed-sponsored event and Bernanke is missing it due to a personal conflict, the news still seems a bit strange.

The strange weather patterns are making him molt a bit early this year. And you can’t go to a summit when you’re molting.

Maybe he is retiring. For “personal” reasons of course.

I already have dibs that the “personal scheduling conflict” involves a tear-stained handwritten note and a 10th-story window ledge.

Maybe he plans on being in a secret underground location at that time

It’s summer and a known date this far in advance is likely to be a wedding, perhaps a family member of child of a close friend. I wouldn’t read too much into it until a lame excuse is offered, until then, it could be legit.

I’ll keep my tinfoil handy just in case, though!

A wedding in the family is my reflexive first guess. Most other personal things could be easily rescheduled this far out.

What would be fun is if Bernacke turns out to be an avid hobbyist and has his heart set on going to something like the National Aardvark Fanciers Annual Convention, where he plans to compete in the judged events with his prized pet aardvark, “Fred.” Or some other worthy personal fancy that he finds more appealing than making an ex officio annual appearance at an in-house talkfest. If that’s the case, good for him.

Why does the Kansas City Fed go to Jackson Hill anyhow?

No worry, the Economic Policy Symposium has been rescheduled to meet in a more appropriate venue than Jackson Hole: Black Hole.
