I read that when they designed the F16, they deliberately kept the generals and politicians out of the designing in order to make a superior aircraft.

Most Air Force people I know weren't too thrilled with the F-16. Ironically, one big reason may be related to the fact that it's the cheapest of these aircraft to operate:
it's a single-engine aircraft.
The one recurring complaint I've heard is that the position of the air intake below the cockpit makes it susceptible to pick up dirt and debris from runways when it is taking off.
I'd be curious to hear from Freepers who know more about this than I do -- to see if they have similar thoughts about the F-16.

Legendary aeronautical engineer, Kelly Johnson, had an interesting, unwritten rule, that he would convey verbally to his disciples : starve before doing business with the Navy. They really don't know what they want, and they'll drive you absolutely crazy trying to figure that out.
