Throughout Boston and its surrounding suburbs a metro area usually clogged and bustling on a weekday morning residents found themselves ordered to stay in or stay out of their homes Friday morning, as police launched an unprecedented hunt for Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, an immigrant of Chechen origin who grew up in Cambridge and was identified in video footage from the site of Mondays deadly attack.
The major universities that are the citys lifeblood shut down. The web of buses and squealing transit cars of the oldest underground subway in the nation ground to a halt. The gleaming skyscrapers with names of insurance companies and banks in downtown Boston were lightly peopled.
Stuck without any transportation, Bostonians watched televised news updates and tracked social media sites at their homes, glancing outside to ponder empty streets and shuttered businesses.
When big men with guns and bullet proof vests order you to get out, you get out, said Tim Fiedler, 23, who lives on Norfolk Street, where the Tsarnaev family lives.
A notice from Gov. Deval L. Patricks office said residents of Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge, Allston, Brighton and the entire city of Boston should stay indoors.

This is happening more and more. There is an accident with fatalities on a major highway near me and they shut down the entire freakin highway for hours. There is a protest in the city and the police shut down blocks around it. I appreciate that the police have a hard job and are trying to protect the population, but it is overkill.

They had a car chase only because they did a failed car jacking but they got away.
They had a shoot out and still one gets away.
I;ts been thousands of police from all over the state from different towns and God knows how many agencies involved and still they have not got him.
I take it they have checked all mosques seeing as only a couple of miles down the road is the biggest mosque in New England, ARF.

There would never be martial law in the US for something like this.
I suspect it’s lawyers that make a lot of the rules related to incidents like that — and maybe public officials making sure they never have to explain why they didn’t do so-and-so in response to an incident.

Every time I see a story like this, I am reminded of an account I read about Roman society after the defeat and capture by the Persians of Emperor Valerian. According to the accounts, Rome freaked out about the defeat and capture of their emperor. The result was several additional layers of bureaucracy and more spies in Roman communities to inform on other Romans or to dig out Persian spies. It was viewed as a turning point at which the Roman Empire became much more totalitarian.
You are not obligated to stay inside...

The kill count (but not major maiming injuries which should not be minimized) was much higher with those Wash, DC snipers. Did they shut anything down? No. Why not?
I was referring to the other incidents described in the prior post, not this particular situation. Sorry for the confusion there.
