A buddy of mine works at AA headquarters and he says that they are freaking out there over a outage in the reservation system. He says that they are grounding all flights globally. They can't figure out what's wrong and suspect it may be cyber terrorism.
Heinlein never met Bronco Bama
At least it was Toronto!
I don't know what I mean by that but I just had to post it anyway!
Just boarding my flight now at DFW after a 2.5 hour delay.
As you say...
Its better to shut it down elegantly rather than have it fail spectacularly
I would think that an airline would base their system on Erlang, which is a language that can route around network problems and allows hot upgrades with no downtime. It was developed by Ericcson for cell phone networks.
“It was designed by Ericsson to support distributed, fault-tolerant, soft-real-time, non-stop applications. It supports hot swapping, so that code can be changed without stopping a system.”

Very simple, in an effort to merge US Airways system with AA, they found out why you never mix matter with anti-matter.
US Airways should have been run out of business years ago. I flew an average of 120+ flights a year for over 20 years and by far they are the lowest of the low lives.
Maybe someone plugged an Ethernet switch in to the system.

Your comment is one of the reasons I need this site...I need a laugh somewhere amongst all the gloom and doom and you have provided.
Thank you!
I hate when that happens! We need an edit function.

Just because the language supports something doesn’t mean the software written in it does. One changing of a database table without somebody bothering to ask “what’s the new code going to think of the old data, and what’s old code going to think of the new data” and your hot swap just exploded in your face.
And you think they are going to let those passengers off of those grounded flights—ha!
Or possibly Y10K, but a little early.
