President Barack Obama’s second term has so far been a story of high liberal hopes and scant liberal achievements.
The president has been re-elected, demographic trends favor the growth of his coalition, his party has a technological edge, and his opposition is confused and divided. One might therefore expect Obama to be enacting the legislative agenda of that rising coalition. Yet the White House has to be disappointed, whatever it says, by the way the second term has been going.
The president’s poll numbers have been falling since December, for one thing. His average job-approval rating, compiled on Pollster.com, has been below 50 percent for weeks.
And liberal policy gains have been sparse, and mostly unrelated to Obama. His campaign for new gun regulations is fizzling out -- and not, primarily, because of opposition from the Republican House or filibuster threats from Republican senators. Harry Reid, the leader of the Senate Democrats, has kept an assault-weapons ban out of the gun bill because it had fewer than 40 supporters. That’s in a chamber that has 55 Democrats. The main gun legislation now under consideration is a proposal for “universal background checks” that is filled with exemptions.
Liberals can celebrate the rapidly increasing support for same-sex marriage. Most of the action on that issue, though, is taking place in state legislatures, referendums and the courts. Obama hasn’t had much to do with it. If the Supreme Court declares traditional marriage laws unconstitutional, it won’t be because the administration has asked for it; it hasn’t.

Don’t get overconfident. Obama is cunning, (not smart), and will stop at nothing to bring the country to it’s knees. Obama has a great deal of support from some very wealthy people, a complicit media, and a stupid public.

Not only is it a failure, but it’s the fourth two-term presidency in my lifetime (I was born in ‘80). I’m getting tired of the “assumed second terms.” Would be nice to see a long string of one-termers for a while.

I think that's factually incorrect. IIRC, the DoJ filed a brief in opposition to DOMA. To a reasonable person, that's asking the Supreme Court to declare traditional marriage laws unconstitutional.

If Obama gets an amnesty, his second term will be an overwhelming success. Add a couple more SCOTUS justices and the Dems will call Obama the greatest Pesident ever.

Obama and his idiotic “rules of engagement”, and his policies of weakness and appeasement have dialed back the WOT on their turf. So now the terrorists have moved it to ours.

One by one Obama is implementing the liberal agenda. Obamacare was a huge victory and won't be repealed. It will modified and mended until we get to a single payer system. He has successfully taken over health care in this country. Medicare and Medicaid have now been complemented by Obamacare filling in the last piece.
He was easily reelected despite a "failed" first term. We have reached a tipping point as tribal politics will continue to increase and dominate the political landscape as the demographics of this country rapidly change.
He has implemented the gay agenda getting rid of "don't ask, don't tell," and eventually getting gay marriage, which is expanding state by state.
He has co-opted the Reps to support an amnesty that will make the Dems the permanent majority party. Boehner has abandoned the Hastert rule and will help Obama pass his agenda.
Whether he succeeds in gun control or not, the Dems will continue to push the issue as they have so many others until they are successful. Hillary will finish job when she is elected in 2016. And no doubt, the composition of SCOTUS will be changed during these years eliminating the last real roadblock to the liberal agenda.
If this looks like failure for Obama, then the Dems will want more of it.
