Inside North Korea: No Ads, No Planes, No Internet, No Mobiles, No 21st Century... A rare dispatch from deep within the lunatic rogue state enslaved by Zombie and Sons
By JOHN SWEENEY IN PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA 13 April 2013
Down, down inside the Pyongyang Metro stands a statue of the Eternal Ruler of North Korea, Generalissimo Kim Il Sung dead these past 19 years but still calling the shots. Brainwashing cast in bronze.
The regimes florid propaganda blares from loudspeakers: The pure white snows of our sacred mountains artillery will wipe the filthy enemy from existence. Or something like that.
The newspaper racks on the platforms detail the latest from the American imperialist aggressors and warn of thermo-nuclear war.
Inside: Panorama reporter John Sweeney with a North Korean colonel overlooking the De-Militarised Zone
No ordinary North Koreans talk to us. Almost 400ft below the surface, its hard not to feel that were trapped inside a doomsday cult like the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas, or Jim Joness Peoples Temple in Guyana. Only this one is a cult nation, armed with nukes, and the clock is counting down to Armageddon.
Ive reported from Ceausescus Romania, Saddams Iraq, Gaddafis Libya, Mugabes Zimbabwe and the Ayatollahs Iran but after eight days undercover in North Korea, I believe this regime is the most frightening tyranny of all.
North Korea is capable of nuclear missile strike, say US spies citing anniversary of grandfather's birthday as date for possible test launch Kim The Firsts grandson, Kim Jong Un, has the power to make the biggest of bangs. The new boy-God holds his people in near-total mental enslavement.
The regime is mad, bad and silly, all at the same time. But its grip is fading and that makes it even more dangerous.

Like Robinson Crusoe, it’s primitive as can be.
what I wonder is whether the upper echelons of the military have access to the internet and cable transmissions. I find it hard to believe that no one in that country knows what is going on outside of NK.
they had internet for tourists for a couple of months at ery exorbidant prices. Then they decided to cut it off.
They have had ads for a truck on billboards and even once on state TV, pretending as if there is a market or something
Supposedly a point of pride or something.
Very few were ever built and it was a joint venture with a company owned by the Unification Church
I read somewhere that the Un-cola, and top party members do have the internet, and rely on Japanese isp services. Recent developments may have changed that.
It’s a literal Potemkin Village
Sounds like the basis of a new reality show: Flip this Country.
You’re kidding yourself if you don’t think that Gay Leader Baby Kim has us all figured out. The Soviets have always maintained a huge think tank committed to analyzing the US. I believe the Chinamen do it to this day, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Norks had one. The NK provocation has been fully earned by our light in the loafers bathhouse leader!
No, but they have really cool costumes.
I see your point but in China, the generals of the PLA have full access to the 21st century and yet many of them sound like Kim’s generals.
The way Arrogant, Incompetent, Communist Tyrant Kim Jong Obama is solving the USA Financial Disaster, North Korea of today just might, could, be the USA of Tomorrow.

This story really tells how primitive they are living.
well...it is a village where all the chilrens are ‘taken care of’ in special places...it’s true there’s a shortage of vittals in their special camps and that it’s is so bad some kids croak but they ‘ARE’ watched over....Outside of that the healthcare plans are ACES. So it goes in communist workers paradises... where there is equality everywhere and everyone is equally miserable, except of course the commisariat. There’s not a lot of much needed tourist hard currency inflow however. They might could use it to buy a truckload of expired MRE’s or something.
No democratic republic with a market economy has ever suffered a famine.
Hence the term statist. They don’t want change. Their good thing comes from the luck of their position and legalism.
