Citing the recent controversy over his comments on same-sex marriage, neurosurgeon and rising conservative star Dr. Benjamin Carson has voluntarily stepped down as commencement speaker at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
The Baltimore Sun reported that Carson, who heads the department of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, informed medical school Dean Paul B. Rothman in a letter that he didn't want to "distract from the celebratory nature of the day."
"Given all the national media surrounding my statements as to my belief in traditional marriage, I believe it would be in the best interest of the students for me to voluntarily withdraw as your commencement speaker this year," Carson notes in the letter to Rothman who later shared it with the Johns Hopkins community.

John Hopkins just LOST a whole cadre of donors and legatees who would have and could have given millions to the University.

I used to think highly of such post secondary institutions as Notre Dame and John Hopkins. Not anymore. They have fallen for the propaganda of the liberal utopian fascists. We’ll see how they like THAT in a few years.

Very unfortunate that unpopular views in the forum of the University only extends to those “radical ideas” that are blessed by popular opinion but I think Dr. Carson in this instance was correct in making the students and their successes the story on this day instead of himself.

Just two days ago my youngest is at soccer and he;s moved to an older team and we met some of the parents and one couple are on the left and yes I spoke up about what I believe and how disgusting homosexuality was to me and what marriage is.
Their reply nothing because when you confront the left they have no idea what to say past their sticker slogans or if they’re not in a big group

That would be even stupider than those students protesting Dr Carson’s speaking at the medical school commencement. It would be cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face, and then some.
Anyone who graduates from Hopkins Medical School is highly qualified as an M.D. It’s THE top hospital and among the top 3 medical schools in the country. That there are a few homosexuals or homosexual sympathizers doesn’t make them any less qualified to practice medicine. If your life or a loved one’s were on the line, you’d be fortunate to have a Hopkins Medical School graduate in charge.
I won’t give up yet on Hopkins. You’re singling it out for a few whiners.
Best hospital/school in the world, period.
Biggest disappointment to me is they accepted Saudi money and named a new wing after the Moslem bastard.
I really should write a letter to them.
Some other school has an excellent chance at getting a great speaker and person.
Let’s just hope that the remaining members of the graduating class will be FURIOUS with the 8 who complained, bitterly disappointed with losing such an illustrious speaker due to their bullying, and will form a whole new opinion re: what the bullies represent.

How many movies have been made about Hopkins surgeons?
AFAIK, only Dr. Carson and Dr.Blalock (Something the Lord Made).
I'm sure there must have been others. I just can't think of them now. Maybe something about Denton Cooley.
And BOTH movies dealt with RACISM and overcoming prejudice.
The doctor has a connection to me - he fixed my baby nephew’s skull 25 years ago. He was very reassuring to my parents and sister (RIP) and very humble, telling them all thanks goes to God.
This is very much a Christian man, in the original Biblical sense. He is not a fighter, per se.
And the HATERS win another one.
It is not going to help Hopkins medical students find a residency. Match Day 2014 will be a surprise for some of them.
