The evidence for a very old Earth came from Geology long before anyone on the Biology side adopted their models.

The fossil record demonstrates stasis in species. The evidence is overwhelming. Creatures disappear from the fossil record unchanged from their original appearance. So much for micro-evolution.

And there is no plausible mechanism for macro.
