Sen. McCain: I ‘don’t understand’ GOP threats to filibuster Senate gun bill
The Hill ^ | April 7, 2013 | Meghashyam Mali

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Sunday expressed opposition to possible GOP efforts to filibuster a Senate gun-control measure, saying he did not “understand” the move to block debate.

“I don’t understand it,” said McCain on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “The purpose of the United States Senate is to debate and to vote and to let the people know where we stand.”

“What are we afraid of? Why would we not want… if this issue is as important as all of us think it is, why not take it to one of the world’s greatest deliberative bodies

… A number of GOP lawmakers, including Sens. Rand Paul (Ky.), Mike Lee (Utah), Marco Rubio (Fla.), and Ted Cruz (Texas) wrote to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) vowing that they would “oppose the motion to proceed to any legislation that will serve as a vehicle for any additional gun restrictions.”

Reid is planning to bring to the Senate floor this month legislation that would expand background checks, toughen penalties on straw purchasers of firearms and provide funding for school safety.

What’s not to understand? This is how stampedes get headed off. The rush to get something, anything, on the books as a “solution” for gun violence, only to realize later that far more regulation is ALREADY inscribed in the old statutes and law codes, and not repealed, that is not today being enforced.

Passing “new” laws is about as ineffectual of a strategy that could be thought up, if, like the laws already on the book, these “new” laws will only be enforced capriciously and sporadically, as the political coloration of the target changes.

Armed NRA members are regarded as MORE dangerous than armed gangbangers from Chicago. Yet, in a year’s time, how many persons die at the hands of gangbangers, and how many die at the hands of NRA members?

Yep.

Dutch Boy said it best:

Pass a law that claims to protect the people but don’t enforce it. Demand that more restrictive laws be passed. Don’t enforce them either on criminals. Focus on minor infractions of the common citizen. Gradually as more and more laws are passed, the people lose the ability to protect themselves. More laws are demanded because there is little a common person could do to protect themselves. This time the laws evolve from restrictive to oppressive. Still nothing seems to work. Then the only remaining solution is complete confiscation.

I don’t understand why McCain doesn’t just change over to the Democrat party.

He would lose seniority and thus influence which is all these people care about.

He has become the Mr. Magoo of the Senate, except not so innocent as the cartoon character.

McCain is too stupid to hide his arrogance. Then again, most of the people are too stupid to know what’s arrogant about what he said.

mccain thinks we’re stupid enough to believe a rino politician’s not understanding why this filibuster is a good thing. he’s just offensive.

“I don’t understand it,” said McCain

This character’s so senile he doesn’t understand how to tie his shoes.

The purpose of the senate is most definitely NOT to let the people see where they stand - it’s to represent the people of the United States, something they haven’t done in twenty years.

A man who was held as a POW doesn’t understand why we want to keep our civil liberties?

Seriously?

Go home John. And stay there and never show your face again.

All McCain had to do was challenge 0bama’s liberalism and his utter lack of experience but he wasn’t even able to do that. If he were pres. we would have boots on the ground in Libya and Syria right now.

He crashed 3 planes, almost flunked out of Annapolis, dumped his ailing wife, married into biiiiiig money:

He’s not a self-made man, not emotionally stable, not loyal, and the only honorable thing he’s done in his entire life is refuse early repatriation from VN —a weird fluke.

The man is an insect.

That’s right McDunce <:(, take a vote in a democrat controlled senate. I sincerely hope AZ wakes up and rids us of his ignorance. Rubio and Paul have done more than this jacka$$ has done in years.

****legislation that would expand background checks,***

Scenario 1.
The devil is in the details. My friend wants to sell his gun and can't get to a gun show. HE gives me the gun to sell for him.

At the show, I meet a man in the first isle who wants to trade guns. He gives me cash to boot. Deal made.

Same for the fifth , seventh and 12 isle.

On the way out I buy from a dealer a firearm I like. I pass the NICS check and it is mine.

NOW, UNDER these new laws, my friend should have run a NICS check on me before I took his gun to the gun show.

I and the man Buying the gun should have ran NICS checks on each other when we traded.

Same for both of us in isles five, seven, and twelve.

Then a NICS check for my buy from a dealer. Now the problem. NICS shows the original gun did not belong to me. I am carted off to jail, all my guns seized as "Illegal" and I am considered a felon in posession of a stolen firearm.

Scenario 2.

My friend has a car in the shop and can't pay for it. He offers to sell me his gun for cash to get his car. Deal made.

On the way home, I am stopped for a tail light out. Cop sees gun in car, calls backup.

Quick check shows gun is not registered to me. I am now considered a felon with an illegal gun. Gun is seized.

I go home and find cops there cleaning out my gun cabinets as I am now a suspected felon in possession of firearms.
