Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, one of Congress' most outspoken liberals and a vehement opponent of chained CPI, warned Obama on Friday morning not to renege on his promise to avoid cuts to entitlement programs and veterans benefits as a way to reduce the deficit.
Millions of working people, seniors, disabled veterans, those who have lost a loved one in combat, and women will be extremely disappointed if President Obama caves into the long standing Republican effort to cut Social Security and benefits for disabled veterans and their survivors through a so-called chained CPI, he said in a statement.
Others on the "left" also expressed warnings to the president after news of the chained CPI proposal. "You can't call yourself a Democrat and support Social Security benefit cuts," Stephanie Taylor, Progressive Change Campaign Committee co-founder, said in a statement. "The president is proposing to steal thousands of dollars from grandparents and veterans by cutting cost of living adjustments, and any congressional Democrat who votes for such a plan should be ready for a primary challenge. Social Security is the core of the progressive and Democratic legacy."

When “O” first got into office he tried to pass a law that all injured military had to pay for their own medical care.
Congress shot that down big time.
It looks like he is at it again. Demoralizing the military makes us ripe for the Hitler mentality type
Maybe the reference is to the explosion of people who are under the age of 62 enrolled in the disability program. You still need 40 quarters to be eligible for disability, but it’s draining the program.
You MUST have 40 quarters to be eligible to receive Social Security unless a parent dies than the child receives SSI until 18. If you dont have 40 quarters as an adult, you are not getting Social Security no matter how much the legend tells you.
So the book reads. However, Social Security does cover the disabled with any number of quraters worked.
Sorry, retired citizens, we have to pay for contraceptives for Sandra Fluke and sex-change operations for illegal aliens!
Can someone please tell me why Social Security can’t go back to its original purpose - to help senior citizens who have retired and who have paid into the system their whole lives? As it is today, everyone and her uncle is eligible to receive SS benefits! I happened to be in a SS office recently and the place was PACKED with young people, children, middle aged folk, and some older people. Also, I saw interpreters from all over the world sitting there with their clients. What a messed up mess!!!! Our hard-earned tax money is being squandered!!!!
Don’t let liberals change the dialogue. SS is a TRUST FUND, NOT AN ENTITLEMENT. It is paid into by workers and their employers match the amount they pay in.
Entitlement? Try Medicaid, which Obama has advanced by stealing from Medicare. That is an entitlement.
Whenever a D or R spouts SS as an entitlement, we need to straighten them out on the subject.
We need a photoshop of Obama pushing Granny over a cliff...
“Social Security would work if it was on simple basics. I put in 6.2% my employer puts in 6.2% and when you retire you get a lump sum tax free of whatever was put away over the course of your lifetime of work.”
That system works just fine when there is a testicle lock box, but when the “government” is allowed to spend the entire income of the United States, plus 40 percent more, it becomes painfully obvious to even the bottom of the intelligence ladder, that a forty percent cut in that which government gives (right, govt gives, govt doesn’t have anything to give now does it) to retirees in the form of SS, is going to be an absolute must if the budget is ever going to balance. My thought as an SS recipient would be, we need to remind ourselves daily that we are just as much a part of the problem as govt, and until we are willing to accept that fact, we are going to continue to demand that which the government has no right or mandate under the Constitution, to be involved in.
SS is a TRUST FUND, NOT AN ENTITLEMENT
Here is how you prove it is an entitlement. Try to cut the program.
That said, if it was a trust fund, see testicle lock box, there would not be an issue. Your money paid in would be available for disbursement to you. There is no trust fund. It has been spent by your representative in the Congress.
What remains is the pocket change from your children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren much less their potential for benefiting from the SS program. It will not exist when their time comes.
Just the opposite. In the summer of 2008 there was the big jump in gas prices. Because Social Security's cost of living adjustment is calculated from the third quarter's CPI (the full one including food and fuel) SS recipients got a 6% increase in January 2009. Gas prices crashed after the summer getting down to $1.41 by Christmas. Between that and the crash in the housing prices there was a negative CPI change by the third quarter of 2009, so no SS increase for 2010. By the third quarter of 2010 the CPI still wasn't up to the 2008 level so no increase again.
If the SS cost of living increase was calculated from the fourth quarter CPI and avoided the 2008 gas price bubble you would have gotten about 2% for each of 2009, 2010 & 2011. Instead you got 6%, 0% & 0% for those years.
Good cop, bad cop routine. Obama wants to hang this on the Reps even if it makes sense. The idea is to make this a GOP initiative that Obama was “forced” to accept so he could end sequestration. Lots of ammo for the Dems in 2014. The same old story: the GOP wants to take away your SS and Medicare.
Today it is $105 per month. I don't know many people that make $105 an hour, do you??
You can be a spouse and get SS without contributing a dime.
The government has rigged stats to the point where they are nothing more than propaganda. Inflation is 'low', yet food and fuel are thru the roof. Unemployment numbers 'drop', yet the percent of unemployed is the highest since 1970s.
I wonder how many people will be impacted by the recent "payroll tax holiday" with regard to the 40 quarters.
Exactly, many hard core O supporters and Dems are talking about switching to Independent.
SS is a pay as you go system. It has been running in the red since 2010.
...and don’t forget that if a retiree has more taxable income (outside of SS) than the government deems necessary, the retiree’s SS retirement benefits start to be considered “taxable income”.
