National Security: The administration moves an advanced missile defense system to Guam because it knows a single low-yield nuke detonated at high altitude could send America back in time a hundred years.
The announcement Wednesday by the Defense Department that it would soon deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System (THAAD), a missile defense system inherited from the Bush administration, to Guam underscores the seriousness of the threat from North Korea, whose actions, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel rightly said, "present a real and clear danger."
This move comes after the Obama administration reversed its previous scuttling of Bush administration plans to increase our ground-based interceptor force in Alaska and the deployment of two destroyers equipped with Aegis missile defense systems, the Decatur and the John McCain, to the region.
Some observers dismissed it as familiar bluster when North Korea's 28-year-old raging runt, Kim Jong-un, signed an order for North Korea's strategic rocket forces to be on standby to fire at U.S. targets in front of a map that included Austin, Texas, as a target.
But other observers are concerned that a specific target may not be what the possibly imploding North Korean regime may have in mind.
The three-stage missile North Korea launched last December that also orbited a "package," which experts say could be a test to orbit a nuclear weapon that then would be de-orbited on command anywhere over the U.S. and exploded at a high altitude, releasing an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). That would fry electronic circuitry and the nation's power grid.

We were too busy trying to get clean water (boil water notice is a joke when you have no electricity. unless you have a wood cookstove, firewood and access to reasonably unpolluted surface water), food (grocery stores were empty for weeks down here) and access to medical care (difficult when theres giant trees down on your main road. For mile after mile after mile).

Uh huh. That’s why we prep.
Everyone needs a water filtration device in their homes — now. They run around $300 — easily purchased if you just give up a few dinners out for the month. Same goes for food storage.
Anyone who is not prepared to survive in place for at least 3 months with food, water, and needed medicines is a complete dufus.
Even if they put us at the head of the line, it would still take months to deliver and install them.
How long can Los Angeles or Chicago or Philadelphia or New York last with rolling blackouts 22 hours per day?
Like I said in another post, if things get that bad I see rural folks and families banding together and going on the offensive and trying to keep roamers away from the homesteads.
It wouldn’t be just Houston and burbs. And there’d be no power company trucks driving in from Arizona, Tennessee, Kentucky or Florida to fix Y’all.
Houston didn’t fix its power all by itself after Ike. And South Mississippi didn’t after Katrina either. I saw convoys of power trucks from states as far away as Montana and Idaho.
If it weren’t for that concerted effort (Thanks again y’all!) we’d probably still be fixing Katrina damage.
And you knew Ike was coming and prepared. How many of your neighbors have a weeks worth of clean water right this minute? What about the other suburbs? What about the EBT card holders?
“You have food on hand forever, can grow everything you need, can manually pump your own drinking water, and can hold off millions of starving and hostile city dwellers, forever?”
I can certainly grow more than I need, I can ride my bike anywhere I would drive to, including up the river into the mountains where the water is clean. And there are no millions of city dwellers within 800 miles. The biggest issue truthfully would be medication for my wife and looking after my kids and grand kids. And there all within biking distance. The family would probably hole up at my daughter’s house. She has acreage and a large in ground pool that could provide drinking water till utilities were restored if they went out.
The range of effectiveeness of the sub-megaton airbursts are limited. North Korea at present does not have the warheads or the ICBMs required to affect more than a few local areas, and thosee IRBM or ICBM may very well be intercepted safely. More dangerous at present is an undetected suicide attack by a NORK submarine not suspected to exist. Such an attack could be directed at a seaport.
I agree with your statements.
However, how many of your neighbors have these preps in place? Are you willing to watch your neighbors kids starve? What if your neighbor is an electrical engineer with the know how to fix things once the equipment to do so becomes available? Do you let him starve?
How many of the EBT card holders do? If the rest of the infrastructure burns to the ground when the ‘youth mobs’ riot it will be far longer than 3 months before order is restored.
And those really big step down generators? Take months to deliver after an order. We no longer make those in this country.
T1D’s are dead within 2m. Ditto anyone needing chemotherapy or antibiotics for anything. Burn victims either. And there will be a lot of those as people try to boil water, cook food over fires and just keep warm.
You stand a better chance than most. But your standard of living will revert to the early 1800’s. And if any of your equipment breaks you won’t be getting a replacement any time soon.
That faded fast because there was no repentance in it. It was not popular to suggest that the nation's sinfulness, individual and collective, was and is responsible for our enemies' success.
“Only a fool would not recognize that, for good or ill, we are chained to our cities.”
Politically, as well.
Actually, Austin county went for Romney 57-41. Now if you’re talking about just the UT campus and environs...different story.
Even a small EMP blast in the NE would be horrendous. Densely populated area without clean water, food, heat or sanitation. Nightmare.
The ripple effect on the rest of the country would be felt for years.
There’s still a lot of military and civilian weapons manufactured in that area as well. Our military would begin to have resupply issues fairly quickly.
And let’s not forget that Obammie the Commie pulled our missile defense out of Poland, leaving a great ally unprotected against attacks from the Soviets, the Chinese, and a handful of other dictatorial regimes in the region.
radiation is not a concern for an emp
dead body decomposition and disease is, spoiled foods, used up medicine cabinets
cholera, dysentery, and general mayhem...
but only for 3 months, after that, there will be so few people left, if they survived at all, they most likely are pretty plucky...
I’m not alone in suspecting any tech the norks have comes directly from the chicoms. Therefore, we need to make the assumption that if and when the chicoms want to emp us, the norks will magically develop that technology as well.
The purpose for nork is plausible deniability for the chicoms.
Those posts all make good points.
Many of those e b t people will do each other in before they even leave the city limits.
After that, there would be no more elections and he wouldn’t have to campaign.
He’d head straight for the links.
Terrifying? I guess so.
I consider that a Steven Covey-type of motivational primer for preppers.
Yeah. No radiation from an EMP to speak of.
Which makes it an ideal weapon for destruction. And one well placed weapon could take out a significant percentage of a country’s infrastructure. One well placed nuke wouldn’t be able to do that.
The biggest issue in big cities would be clean water and sanitation. Where do a million people go potty, cleanly, and not contaminate any water supplies? What happens when the potties don’t flush anymore? Or the sewer systems pumping mechanisms work?
And 90% dieoff meets Agenda 21 specs perfectly. With no radiation to contaminate Gaia. Just a lot of dead human ‘cancers on the planet’.
