The Miami Beach Police Department declared the city's first ever gun buyback held at the convention center Saturday a success with more than two dozens firearms turned in to authorities.
"As you can see on the table we have four shotguns and a number of semi-automatic pistols, as well as revolvers," Miami Beach Police Chief Raymond Martinez said. "Those are the type of weapons that we are encountering on the streets here."
"Anything we can do to take a weapon off the street is one less potential disaster," Commissioner Jerry Libbin said.

Why not have the police buy up crack and meth? That would take it "off the streets" and "do something" to reduce crime and "prevent disaster"!
That makes about as much sense as the gun "buyback" idea. It solves nothing. However, it makes it appear grandstanding politicians and useless police chiefs are doing something useful with the money they are throwing away which they first commandeered from us at threat of jail, confiscation, or gunpoint!
“Someone with the IQ of more than a frog please tell me how 25 (probably worthless) guns traded for cash reduces violence? Please make the case, someone - anyone? In every which way I think about these idiotic buy-backs, I can’t understand why the authorities think it does anything other than make them look like they’re doing something.”
Here is my explanation of how “progressives” look at such events. Here goes:
The guns taken from private citizens at these events are numericly inconsiquential, but symbolicaly significant far beyond their numbers.
They show to those reading the event that guns in the hands of private citizens are bad.
They show that the politically correct thing to do with a gun is to turn it in to police. (You will be rewarded!)
They equate getting guns “off the street” means taking them from private homes.
All this is very good for the ultimate goal of disarming the population. A disarmed population will be less violent.
I realize that the last sentence does not make sense, but I am giving you the “progressive” world view.
Charles Krauthammer did it better:
“Passing a law like the assault weapons ban is a symbolic - purely symbolic - move in that direction. Its only real justification is not to reduce crime but to desensitize the public to the regulation of weapons in preparation for their ultimate confiscation.”
-Charles Krauthammer, columnist, Washington Post, April 5, 1996
And what is it that the Commish think these firearms came from "the street"? And what the hell does that mean?
Perhaps they came from good homes. Perhaps they were no longer perceived as needed by their owners.
If these types of programs actually got criminals to turn in firearms then they might be of some use. As it is....well, you all know.
Or, if your a thief with a hot gun, what better way to sell it? 300 bucks is likely more than you would get for it on the street. After all, criminals have to eat too.
Great Idea!!!...I’m thinking I could get rid of all my âjunkâ at an inflated price and buy a really nice assault weapon....The Government to the rescue!..the dumb asses!
I have heard many anti-gun kooks claim that with guns everywhere, every argument between people will end in a gun fight. The kooks project their own dark thoughts on everyone else. You can take just about every issue where they demand more control and see the scenarios they create for justification are descriptions of how they would behave projected onto others.

I wonder if he would agree with:
Anything we can do to take a weapon out of police hands is one less potential disaster.
Two whole dozen in a town the size of Miami .... wow what a whopping sucksess
Honestly, this is just feel-good liberalism. They know it doesn’t reduce crime in anywey.
In fact, in a more basic way, I think this is really just an opportunity for lazy union cops to spend an easy day at the station sipping coffee and eating doughnuts.
More than two dozen dogs are grateful those cops were otherwise occupied.
He said its proof that trading cash for guns works to reduce violence.
Oh yeah, it works about as well as Israel trading
land for “peace”.
Based on the new effort in Tucson to provide shotguns to people who live in high crime areas (which is driving the liberals bonkers), I have another idea.
A “pro-gun gun buyback”.
The idea is that it is a charitable effort, to buy back serviceable guns from those who don’t want them, to give to people of good character who need them.
The emphasis should be to give them to women with protection orders against violent men; women who live alone and are afraid; the poor and disabled, etc.
Importantly, guns would both be given a background check, to insure they had not been used in a crime; and a local gun dealer would have to volunteer to do background checks of buyers to insure that it was legal for them to buy.
There might also be an additional check done at the same time to insure that potential buyers are not Democrat operatives attempting to obtain a gun under false pretenses.
And once all was said and done, the charity would also provide the new gun owner with some precious ammunition.
While this might only need to be done once, I suspect that representatives of the pro-gun organizations, gun manufacturers and retailers, and others would be more than happy to turn it into a publicized event.
And it would really make the heathen rage.
Wow — 24 guns out of how many in Miami. Gangbangers carry more than that in their glove box.
We are thinking along the same lines here. I am thinking of organizing it through local churches.
I would caution to get some legal advice, even to have a lawyer on site, which might be through a pro-gun organization, in case you get official harassment, trying to bluff and bluster you into shutting down.
Also to have several individuals designated to video at different angles if they get a signal. Getting a face shot of a provocateur really sucks a lot of wind out of their sails.
“I would caution to get some legal advice, even to have a lawyer on site, which might be through a pro-gun organization, in case you get official harassment, trying to bluff and bluster you into shutting down.”
Good advice, but I intend to incorporate the local sheriff into the event. He would get good publicity.
Win. Win. Win.
The best is if you have a weapon that’s been used in a crime. The perfect way to safely get rid of the evidence...../s
More Than Two Dozen Firearms Turned in at Miami Beach’s First Ever Gun Buyback
Pathetic response for a city of almost 90 thousand. The Gun Grabbers lose again.
I like that. Excellent idea.
