War veterans in New Rochelle are protesting the city's order for the so-called Gadsden flag to be taken down from its post outside the armory.
A symbol of pride for the veterans, the flag features a rattlesnake and the words, "Don't tread on me."
"That flag is the first flag of the Continetal Navy," said Peter Parente, president of the United Veterans Memorial. He helped hoist the flag up on March 21 during a ceremony to swap out the tattered American flag.
"Before the red, white and blue stripes of America, that was our American flag," he said. "That was the flag we fought under in the Revolutionary War to have the America we are today."
Not everyone agrees. Mayor Noam Bramson, a Democrat, says the flag has become political in nature after being adopted by the tea party movement. This week, he met with council members who, in an informal vote, decided to take it down Thursday.

At the Congress, Continental Colonel Christopher Gadsden represented his home state of South Carolina. He was one of seven members of the Marine Committee who were outfitting the first naval mission.[6]
Before the departure of that first mission in December 1775, the newly appointed commander-in-chief of the Navy, Commodore Esek Hopkins, received the yellow rattlesnake flag from Gadsden to serve as the distinctive personal standard of his flagship. It was displayed at the mainmast.[6]
Gadsden also presented a copy of this flag to the Congress of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. This was recorded in the South Carolina congressional journals on February 9, 1776.
Well, vets are now the new terrorists. Welcome to al Amerika.
The irony here is that New Rochelle is the hometown for Thomas Paine, who wrote Common Sense which fermented the ideas for our American Revolution. In fact there is a statue of Paine accros the street from New Rochelle HS. If the reporter had done some research or had driven around she could have discovered the rich history New Rochelle has as its origins are from the Hugeonots, who left France for religious freedom. But that is expecting too much from today’s politicians or MSM.
btw, I dont live in NR. did 60ys ago but have since left to more patriotic lands.
Thanks for this interesting and appropriate tidbit. When you were there, it was a lovely town.
Ha...nice one.
New Rochelle motto: Do tread on me.
The Bedford Flag is on display in Bedford town hall. Said to be the oldest “American” flag, much to the chagrin of certain elements of the community. For reference, Bedford lies between Lexington and Concord. The Bedford Minutemen would have marched west to Concord to meet the British at the Old North Bridge, and then with Minutemen from the surrounding communities harassed the Red Coats on their long march back east through Bedford and Lexington to Boston.
between age 2yo to 4yo, 1952-1954. my father’s business was there and it was the Petrie’s lifestyle. Many famous people lived there. then the riots of the 60’s and the city changed.
“We will be fighting these people in the streets one day.”
May God speed the day.
Rochelle, France was a Huguenot stronghold. The New Rochelle town library is the Huguenot Library. My Huguenot descended father was born in Mount Vernon, next door. Half the settlers in New Netherlands were Huguenots. The Huguenots, based on bitter experience, were big advocates of the IInd Amendment.
Correction on the time for the Belvidere,N.J. 2A rally on April 14th.
The correct time is 2-4 PM.
agreed. I learned my Hugenot history from my grandmother, when she took me to the Schwartz ice cream parlor which had painted murals of the Hugenots settling NR. My father grew up in Mount vernon on California rd. It is ashame what has happened to that city too.
NR has some high rise Trump towers now. not sure how successful they have been.
It’s getting close to being the Bronx. It’s leftist mayor, Noam Bramson, is a big Agenda 21 supporter and has raised taxes for the past few years. He’s also a candidate for county executive.
It’s a shame. The city is full of history.
Hope the vets make this a big issue.
“Mayor Noam Bramson, a Democrat, says the flag has become political in nature after being adopted by the tea party movement.”
That’s too damn bad, Mr. Mayor!
The Veterans have every right to fly that flag, and YOU have no authority to decide otherwise.
Pretty sad, the state of affairs my family’s original Hometown in Amerca is in. Drake St. ain’t what it used to be that’s for sure. Tom Paine & Norman Rockwell are rolling in their graves for sure.
“Not everyone agrees. Mayor Noam Bramson, a Democrat, says the flag has become political in nature ...”
This is the definition of a non sequiter. Sheesh! Historical fact is historical fact. PERIOD.
