"A lot of people were taken to the police station and we were warned that those that would be found with the radios [in future] will disappear."
The confiscations have left some people fearing that in the run-up to elections, the free media guarantees in the newly approved constitution will not be respected.
But the police force has said the radios are being used to spread "hate speech", brought into the country by unregistered groups ahead of the polls expected in July after four years of power-sharing between President Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF party and the Movement for Democratic Change.

During more “prosperous” times in North Korea, people would get a wall-mounted radio locked to one frequency playing the “Supreme Leader's” speeches. You couldn't turn it off or unplug it. Only turn it down to a whisper...

Not necessarily. Take a look at the mayor of Philadelphia and his attack on the blog article about white reactions towards blacks. The two groups can never live in peace and harmony. One can only pretend, you know that feeling, the pseudo joy when “The Divine One” was elected, the “tingle” down the leg! Yes, THAT pseudo joy!

I was concerned about the right to free speech until I understood this was about “hate speech”. /s
This is starting to happen here as kids in school are trained about hate speech and how it’s OK to suppress it.

My high school German is a bit sketchy, but I think in paraphrase it says, “All Germany hears the Leader with the People’s Receiver”.

What's interesting is in the U.S., it's the radio (of all types) and the Internet where the real news and real discussions involving real people can be found.
Television is a choreographed wasteland of censorship, it's totally rehearsed and manipulated.
It's why I told my cable company to f off long ago.

“All of Germany hears the Fuhrer on the People’s Radio.”
The Nazis created a radio that would only allow them to pick up German broadcasts, and not allow them to pick up foreign-based broadcasts.

Once upon a time, in a land far away, the government would secretly in the dead of night, air drop tiny radios, preset to a specific frequency, so that its voice would be heard by oppressed and unreached people trapped behind an iron curtain. The people would hear the truth, be given hope, and be set free. I'm not so sure that government and its voice exist anymore, and the words of Isaiah, "to lift the heavy burden, and let the oppressed go free" are no longer heard...

Back in the 1960s I read that the Commies developed TV and radio sets that could not receive western broadcasts.
