I know this is not news, but I'm looking for the widest possible audience.
My son and his family are considering a move to Iceland. I'm looking for anyone who might know someone who has moved from the U.S. to Iceland who might be willing to give them some tips on what to expect.
Anyone who knows someone who might be willing to communicate via email with them, please send me a private reply on how they may contact your person/people.
Thanks.

Hey, I was at Keflavik NAS 89-90 (USAF).
If you’re moving there I hope you have lots of money. It’s a quite expensive place to live.

Here's a picture I took in Iceland during last winter.

I’d recommend some warm “snuggies”, instead of speedos. And a real USAF Parka, if you can find a nice US Surplus unit.

I am still trying to pronounce the name of the volcano that erupted there a couple of years ago. Oh yeah, watch out for volcanos.

Per Anthony Bourdain avoid the
Hákarl .
Hákarl is traditionally prepared by gutting and beheading a Greenland or basking shark and placing it in a shallow hole dug in gravelly sand, with the now-cleaned cavity resting on a slight hill. The shark is then covered with sand and gravel, and stones are then placed on top of the sand in order to press the shark. The fluids from the shark are in this way pressed out of the body. The shark ferments in this fashion for 612 weeks depending on the season.
Following this curing period, the shark is then cut into strips and hung to dry for several months. During this drying period a brown crust will develop, which is removed prior to cutting the shark into small pieces and serving. The modern method is just to press the shark's meat in a large drained plastic container.

I had a colleague who had ties to family in Iceland and she and her husband tooks the kids back every year to keep in touch with extended family there. The people are very family-oriented. I don’t remember her complaining about high prices or anything negative. Their home base in the US was Iowa which has pretty cold winters so they’re used to a cold climate.

It’ll take alot of “professional” tutoring by a sweet young local, I am sure. Just do the best you can!
