Ready for the apocalypse! One American family shows what it takes to prepare...
Daily Mail ^ | 3/23/13 | RYAN HERMAN

Posted on 03/23/2013 6:34:00 PM PDT by Kartographer

Imagine if suddenly, and completely without warning, the world experienced a total blackout – no electricity, no mobile phones, no banks, no internet, no TV, no emergency services. Nothing. Highways quickly become jammed with cars that have ground to a halt; an aeroplane falls from the sky; a satellite view of the planet shows it rapidly plunging into darkness. As it becomes apparent that the lights are never coming back on, nations are plunged into chaos, mass riots break out in major cities and, without electricity, governments are toppled. Into the vacuum step ad-hoc militias, armed and ready to enforce their own rule of law. This is the apocalyptic premise of the hit American TV series Revolution, which begins on Sky 1 this week. In the first episode, viewers are pulled through this nightmarish chain of events.

and with the ‘monster’ light, I can spot rig signs back off the road out in the boonies (like having another handheld headlight)

Which light is that?

I think that for security reasons, having an aggressive, powerful flashlight (the type that many here don't know exists) that can dominate your space, your land, and the area under your control and search out nooks and crannies, and identify people and the color of their clothing at 100 and 300 yards away is a powerful boundaries enforcer.

If the grumpy guy with guns and a prepper mentality isn't enough to make a place uninviting, to know that he will put light, brilliant, floody light in the direction of any noise or disturbance on his property line where he can clearly see you and do it while at rifle distances, is a discouragement to pilferers and thieves, and especially sneaky neighbors who could be identified.

It can be found listed on Amazon as the "Trustfire High-power Super Bright 11000 Lumens 9x Cree Xm-l T6 LED Flashlight Torch 18650 / 26650"

They are spendy, but when you need a lot of light for a little while, these fit the bill.

That is an intimidating light, I think that in a sustained period of no electricity, that people seeing that used for a few minutes, a few times a week, would see it as a major security asset.

Not being able to depend on darkness, even at hundreds of yards, destroys the security of darkness that would normally be able to be counted on, at most homes, you can approach right up to the building without any fear of being lit up since the owner’s flashlight is only able to find you when you are very close.

Part of this post of yours is misleading, but I won’t go into it.

I would like to know what is misleading so that I can address it on the thread.

I would like for you to quote the misleading portion.

I just sent you and two others who requested it, the link to the rechargeable battery articles.

For one, I think it is misleading to suggest using D shells and that's because one can only put ONE AA battery inside. One will only have the power of one AA battery, not a D battery. Also, the D rechargeables one gets at a regular store now (and those companies are named in the articles), only has the power of one AA battery inside. The articles discuss what has happened to Ds and gives the name of a company that has high powered Ds with new technology.

Another statement I think is misleading is to suggest higher powered Ds can't be recharged in a solar recharger. I have a 20 Watt solar panel with recharger that recharges higher powered Ds. That is covered in the articles, too.

“What correction or opinion about batteries could possibly need to be secret or private?”

It wasn’t secret or private, I was sending you through Freepmail the link to the articles but it took some writing to guide you through to the correct articles. After I did that, I answered your question in the post just above this one.

You are misunderstanding my post, remember that I talked about all this on a past thread when I was introducing you to the Tenergy D batteries and informing you on rechargeables and adapters.

I didn’t say that solar can’t charge D batteries, solar can power the whole house and AC if there is enough of it, what I said was “”A D battery can be 10,000MaH and would never charge on a small solar charger that can handle 2000MaH AAs, and 800MaH AAAs.””

As far as adapters they can hold 2 AAs or even 3AAs, or as I have posted to you before.

To: Marcella
The AAA to AA are not to REPLACE the AA, it is to give you depth and options if you need it, for instance if you don’t have any AAs.

The AA to D adapters do the same thing, you can make D powered devices work, if AAs are all that you have.

Don’t under estimate that, I use adapters that use 2 AAs in a D adapter, that gives me about 5000 Mahs per adapter to replace a 10 to 11,000 Mah D battery, I have to recharge more often, but it works fine.

If you want to spend the money, buy some Tenergy 10,000mah Ds, or Maha POWEREX 11,000mah Ds.

Figure out if you need to invest in those batteries and make them a part of your life and long term plans and maintenance and replacement, or if those devices need to be sold off and replaced.

Don’t chase the appliance by searching for the battery, let the batteries help you decide which appliance to buy.

Just make sure you don’t wash your clothes in it. The discolored water will stain them, and it won’t come out..

“One thing we need to think about, especially considering the recent developments in drone warfare”

A drone was given to our county sheriff. However, that sheriff has signed with a group of sheriff’s who say they will not take guns from law abiding people.

I converted my Schlitz Long Neck bottle flashlight into an LED flashlight.
I used an LED drop-in and D battery adapters for AA Tenergy rechargeables (2 per adapter).

I am now "prepped" as they say with a truly camouflaged flashlight with a much longer battery life.

I use AA, AAA, and high powered Ds and that’s what I have to have after a hurricane comes through here. I already have these excellent new batteries in all those sizes. I have a couple of D shells I bought to see what they were and they only take one AA in them and that’s worthless. The rechargeable Ds sold in regular stores are also worthless.

If you read the comments of customers who bought these regular brand name Ds, they didn’t know they had Ds with practically no power in them and they were stuck with these inferior batteries.

I studied batteries on my own for months before I ever talked to you. You have your batteries that work for you and I have mine that work for me. To each his own.

Yes I knew about the weak Ds, that is why I had recommended the Tenergy 10,000mah Ds, or Maha POWEREX 11,000mah Ds to you before you owned any.

As part of my preparedness I own D adapters that use a single AA in case I have only that many batteries left and desperately need something to run for a while, or to use it in a light like my Lightwave 4000, that can probably run for a week on that.

I also have 2aa adapters and use those since they are equal to 50% of a D LSD rechargeable, they work great, and especially in my old lights that I have switched to led.

The three AA to D adapters are difficult to find but they exist.

I have three, and two sets of batteries for each light. My wife thought I was nuts, but because I could write them off for my business, she relented.

When the dog barks, the beam gets turned on...

We started doing that to reassure the dog (and see what the different sounding barks meant: challenge versus greeting, mainly), who would bark at things 200 yards and more out from the house, but find that it permits us to see what's out there any time.

At very close range, it is a weapon in the dark--that much light in the face will effectively blind someone for a few seconds at least. No idea exactly what it would do to NVG, but I figure it'd shut them down or mess up the image.

"I'm a girl and can't carry the weight a man can. Those 4/5/6 gallon containers couldn't be moved by me."

This is NOT intended to be insulting, but if you can't move a five gallon pail of water EASILY, you need to start spending some time at the gym. My mom was 5 ft 0 inches and certainly had no problem with such container sizes.

I live in a small town in the South and most of my neighbors are like-minded (i.e. they think Obama is doing everything possible to destroy the country).

I think everyone, in the pits of the stomach, think the S will HTF before too long.

The acid test from a Biblical POV, is of course, Israel. When she is attacked, it will be existential and of Biblical proportions.

“How to Serve Man” —— That one got me scared when I was a kid. These days Obama and his ObamaTrons have me scared because as you know they are in “public service” and are here to “Serve Man” not to enrich themselves and their Solyndra/Fisker buddies/campaign contributors

Good advice, SJ. I hope we can put this apocalypse off for the next decade or so. I’m not that confident that we can.
