The assignment asked students to find evidence for a comparison of Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin's methods of changing Russia from a capitalist country to a command country to President Barack Obama's methods of changing the United States from a capitalist country to a socialist country.

"The mistake made (by the teacher)," said Carnes, "was the line crossed between comparing our president to someone like Stalin, even though we are most definitely progressing toward a socialist union."

Roaches don’t like light.
Elmer Fudd WISHES he could use Stalin’s methods.
My husband is reading Robert Service’s book “Lenin”. It is chilling how many parallels there are with what is going on today.
SO!
Even if you know what is coming, you still can not compare the parallel?
Wait till Obama had his full reign, it will be too lat to start studying the ‘mistake’ to compare Obama and Stalin.
Another thing, if you don’t learn from history, why go to school pretend it is a learning center?
If the teacher had made the assignment to compare Lenin, Stalin, and a current nameless one in our country, it would be ok? Then outraged the students have no problem with Bushhitler?
“The mistake made (by the teacher),” said Carnes, “was the line crossed between comparing our president to someone like Stalin...”
No, no mistake; on the contrary, quite apt.
Ha! Good for Cobb Cunty which a very Republican area. Must have been one of the Prius driving, NPR listening, “Coexist” bumper sticker idiot parents that complained.
I’d say the teacher was on the mark. Funny how when you actually teach, they come after you.
Perhaps he should have used Mao or Juan Peron as the examples.
The way around it, instead of having the students list how they are alike, just get the students to list the differences.
Let the students “learn” on their own there is no difference.
Obama - The Black Russian.
Typical in today’s government schools...truth is a dis-qualifier.
Obama is not a Russian either ~
and by extension this is pretty typical today in most workplaces too...
nor an American either =)
Rather unfortunate key miss.

Seems like the assignment wasn’t comparing Obama to Stalin but the METHODS they used, and that is a perfect way to look at the protections we have and how those protections are being sidestepped. Which isn’t about Obama at all, but about the vulnerabilities in our SYSTEM that are being exploited.
Last year I led a group of kids in my after-school program in doing some thinking exercises, and one of the subjects was how Adolf Hitler could do what he did in Germany without the people rising up against him. We were particularly focused on the METHODS/EXCUSES used to sidestep the built-in protections. It was eye-opening. Once the Enabling Act of 1933 was passed (that allowed Hitler to make laws without the Reichstag - even laws that reversed the Constitution) there was nothing anybody could do legally to stop Hitler. Kinda like ruling by executive order, threatening the Supreme Court, and/or claiming that nobody has “standing” to do anything about unconstitutional usurpation...
Most people are unwilling to break laws, even if they know they are wrong. Most would rather obey man than obey God. And having a government ready to kill you if you resist is a strong deterrent...
Still, I wonder what would happen if a person had the school district who snuffed out this assignment debate the college that fully supported a professor’s tactic of having students stomp on a picture of Jesus...
Whoops!!!!!! :-/
