WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The financially beleaguered Postal Service suffered a setback in its plan to end Saturday delivery of first-class mail as Congress on Thursday passed legislation requiring six-day delivery.
The Postal Service, which lost $16 billion last year, had announced last month its plan to switch to five-day mail service to save $2 billion annually.
No law requires the Postal Service to deliver mail six days a week, but Congress has traditionally included a provision in legislation to fund the federal government each year that has prevented the Postal Service from reducing delivery service.
The House of Representatives on Thursday gave final approval to the legislation, known as a continuing resolution, that maintains the provision, sending it to President Barack Obama to sign into law. The Senate approved the measure on Wednesday.

But the idiots in Congress?
It’s all about union dues. $$$ for Democrats.
Why cut anything? There's no immediate crisis.
I don;t want Saturdays and see no reason why we pay for the crap, most is junk mail anyway.
Also can we stop paying for AMTRAK, and the TSA
I am fine with five-day delivery service, but I would prefer they drop Wednesday instead of Saturday.
I think they should keep Saturday delivery and eliminate Monday through Friday delivery. One day of mail a week is plenty these days.
Hand delivered it one more time this week if they don't get it right this time I will send a letter to the Post Master General.
That should fix it!!!
NOT!
Why?
They should keep Saturday delivery and eliminate Monday delivery.
Plus I think my mail lady skips me every other day some weeks.
Its all about union dues. $$$ for Democrats.

That. And only Congress can approve ending Saturday deliveries. And since nobody asked Congess if they could - the little wussies got their feewings hurt and denied it.
Egotistical!
Monday: No mail
Tuesday: No mail
Wednesday: A ton of mail.
Thursday: No mail
Friday: No mail
Saturday: A ton of mail.
Actual days and quantities may vary, but the pattern is fairly stable.
The ISPS could cut delivery to 3 days a week and customers would be content.
My mailman skips about a third of the houses in the neighborhood most everyday unless he has junk mail.
It’s all about paying off unions.
The dues are the same with or without Saturday delivery.
Nobody wants it? Really? I’m pretty sure people in the mail order business would dispute that.
They could save money by making the USPS hire people based on their qualifications, and not based on some quota.
House of Representative’s agenda:
Keep mail on Saturday
Keep tours in White House
Unbelievable. No wonder they are hated by the American People.
Ah yes, Congress. One of our Freepers has this as a tag line and I think it apropos here: “One useless man is a shame, two are a law firm, three or more are a Congress” — John Adams
Why?
If the average resident gets 1 pound of junk mail per week - who cares if they get it 5 days a week or 6.
It all goes in the garbage anyway.
