A Florida Atlantic University student said he was punished after he refused a professors directive to stomp on a piece of paper with the word Jesus written on it. The university, meanwhile, is defending the assignment as a lesson in debate.
Im not going to be sitting in a class having my religious rights desecrated, student Ryan Rotela told television station WPEC. I truly see this as Im being punished.
Rotela, who is a devout Mormon, said the instructor in his Intercultural Communications class told the students to write the name Jesus on a sheet of paper. Then, they were told to put the paper on the floor.
He had us all stand up and he said Stomp on it, Rotela said. I picked up the paper from the floor and put it right back on the table.
The young college student told the instructor, Deandre Poole, that the assignment was insulting and offensive. I said to the professor, With all due respect to your authority as a professor, I do not believe what you told us to do was appropriate, Rotela said. I believe it was unprofessional and I was deeply offended by what you told me to do.
Rotela took his concerns to Pooles supervisor where he was promptly suspended from the class.
Poole did not return calls seeking comment. According to his university profile, he has a PhD from Howard University and is authoring a book titled, Obamamania: The Rise of a Mythical Hero.
The university did not explain why students were only instructed to write the name of Jesus and not the name of Mohammed or another religious figure.

The student can just inconvenience himself and transfer out.
I wouldn’t dream giving a university any money nor my time, if I had any indication this would happen.
Why are parents allowing their children to attend these places?
Already, the kids are coming out $20,000 average debt.
No jobs.
The child and his parents are condoning this by attending.
When are Americans going to say NO?
Catholic, Jesuit, especially, universities have been anti Catholic since the 1950s
It is just too late to continue complaining about it.
NO money to these places
...another in a long line of communist educrats...
This guy looks like a serial killer instead of the typical affirmative action slug on staff at a university near you.
“spend the remainder of his life on Earth as an attendant at some mens lavatory in a gay bar!
I was walking in the downtown of a local college town and some “happening” was going on in front of a music venue and they had written down a bunch of words and taped them to the sidewalk. One of the words was “Jesus.” I took it off the sidewalk. What are people thinking? Same town and during some breast cancer awareness week there was about 100 bras tied together and strung alone a bridge. Mr. Mercat wouldn’t let me out of the car to cut them down.
Less so if you take ... Constitutional Law, etc.
Back to useless if you had a certain professor at the University of Chicago in the 1990s. Then it would be completely useless.
OK, let this dorkface “professor” make a Muslim stomp on the page of a Koran.
He’ll learn about debate really fast.
In fact, I’ll volunteer to do the beheading of this idiot for the Muslim if asked.
I’ve had it with tolerating “professors” who couldn’t pass a real university course even if they had quotas and cheating like the Quota Baby in Chief.
bump for later
I think a lesson from a dim witted leftist on what he REALLY thought about the Constitution (a charter of “negative liberties” what the government cannot do, rather than what it had to do on your behalf) would be VERY educational.
Sort of like how reading Mein Kampf would be very educational and instructive for people in Germany in the 1930’s.

Or the professor's god, 0bama.
But why is this a college level course in the first place?

or an “eat a pork sandwich or fail the course” day.
On my only 4 semesters at UW, I literally gave the finger 3 inches to the face my lib professor for having us write an essay on why America is evil. It was Business Ethics 102. Literally wanted to grab him by the neck but I was transferring to Stanford, didn’t want to mess up my transfer papers and my classmates physically took me back. I effing’ hate lib professors.

Maybe someone should write A-HOLE across the instructors face and stomp on that.Somebody needs to put the fear of God or an old man in this guy and this sh!t will stop.
Key section of the article:
“Have the students write the name JESUS in big letters on a piece of paper, the lesson reads. Ask the students to stand up and put the paper on the floor in front of them with the name facing up. Ask the students to think about it for a moment. After a brief period of silence instruct them to step on the paper. Most will hesitate. Ask why they cant step on the paper. Discuss the importance of symbols in culture.
It seems the Mormon responded the way the lesson anticipated, and therefore his cries of persecution are strange. It is also worth noting that the Professor is writing a book called “Obamamania: The rise of a mythical hero.” Which doesn’t sound positive for Obama.
I would have to get the Professor’s side of the story before I pass any kind of judgment in my mind on the matter. I am thinking that, most likely, the Mormon student overreacted, and made much ado about nothing, since the lesson itself says that refusing to step on it was part of the lesson itself.
Ph.D from Howard U=barely literate. This is what happens when Affirmative Action trumps intelligence and ability.
I could almost see the class being useful for a “devote Mormon” if he thought “Intercultural Communcations” might help him on his future 2-year mission work.
I do suspect that the course catalog description did him (and everybody else enrolled) a major disservice.
My thought exactly. This would be national news if instead of Jesus it were Allah, Budah, Mohammad, or some Hindu god.
