RENO, Nev. An official at the Hawthorne Army Depot says an explosion has occurred during a Marine Corps training exercise.
Russ Collier told KRNV-TV in Reno that the explosion Monday night was an accident unrelated to the ammunition that is stored at the military facility near the small desert community of Hawthorne.
There was no immediate information of any injuries. Calls to the depot and to U.S. Joint Munitions Command, which oversees the facility, were not immediately answered.

Mortar fuzes can be tricky. I remember firing WWII vintage 81 mm rounds with VT fuzes at Schofield Barracks back in ‘77. They were fired with charge packs for max range and the fuzes were setting the rounds off in mid air just a few hundred meters from the firing pits. Had to shut down the range that day...
Nothing like old rounds to keep you on your toes or a misfire in the tube!
Do we have another wahhabi terrorist like Nidal Hassan? BTW what ever happened to that wahhabi terrorist?
There’s testing and disposal activities at Hawthorne, Honey Lake and a disposal area south of Hawthorne, as I recall.
There’s huge amounts of ammo stored at Hawthorne. If you fly over the area in a light plane, you’ll see the high desert studded with hundreds (or even thousands) of the ammo bunkers, with their doors facing each other across an access road east and south of the town of Hawthorne. They don’t fool around there - the trucks carrying the loads of ordnance have to detour around the town center of Hawthorne, and there are signs all over the streets to that effect, directing trucks carrying ordnance as to which way they have to navigate from the depot to north or south on US 95.
Nevada is filled with military activities which other states never see, know even less about and don’t care. There’s a reason why most Nevadans are opposed to nonsense like being used as a nuke waste dump - because Nevada is already used for these types of activities far in excess of what every other state is doing for national defense, and Hawthorne is one such example.
Especially southern Nevada:
Can’t speak to the exact current operation but the place is a Naval Ammunition Depot. Some of Everything the Navy and Marine Corp uses is kept there. Last time I trained there, which was some decades ago, we shot everything we had. It’s a big place with room for armor maneuvering, air ops, and all the rest. A tube ignition for a 60 mm mortar is so freeking unlikely that I have to suspect either sabotage or extreme clusterflockability. Does any one else remember that web video from a few years ago that showed an Arab guy shooting a small mortar-—3-rounds no problem but the fourth went off in his tube? I always suspected we were salting the earth. Semper Fi.
We’ve been doing this to the enemy for a long time. I wonder if they’ve infiltrated our defense contractors and are meting out revenge.
Of course, the Idiot in Chief can’t honor them appropriately. Just had a few throw-away lines today during a St Patrick’s event... 6 shot at a Sikh temple got flags at half-staff. 7 dead Marines get nothing, not even a formal statement.
Who the heck talks like this? "Clearly?"
....don’t think so...more like an accidental situation sadly.
It’s surprising it doesn’t happen more often with the amount of activity and handling we’ve had within the last 20 years or so. We may never know for sure what happened.....handling munitions in itself has it’s consequences if things aren’t followed correctly.....what becomes almost routine, can become fatal. We’ll have to wait and see what is released....
Idiots who have no respect for the military and understand just how corrupt the Obama WH is. Clearly

Well, that is so ‘US’ Conspiracy Freaks don’t go running off half cocked and blame the Muzzies, like we did at that ‘workplace’ violence incident at Ft Hood TX..
If the /sarc/ tag is necessary etc etc
BTW did the Navy ‘sell’ the Depot to the Army?
I know/knew of the place as
USNAD Hawthorne NV—
US Naval Ammunition Depot, Hawthorne, Nevada.
a sad day... Semper Fi
Yep, I never met a tool and die man with two fully intact hands. I pray for them and hope that this is just isolated, but I live by the Moscow Rules and will keep my eyes open.
You should meet my father, he’s a 72 year old tool and die master craftsman. Has all his fingers and works 12 hours a day every day.
Perhaps. I meant it reminded me of Obama’s verbal tics when he is faking caring about something, or lying, he says things like this “clearly” or “obviously,” when I hear that, I assume he doesn’t believe what he is saying, or thinks we won’t believe him.
Thanks for the ping Reblebase !
Hope yer well....
