Support for gay marriage reached a new high in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, marking a dramatic change in public attitudes on the subject across the past decade. Fifty-eight percent of Americans now say it should be legal for gay and lesbian couples to wed.
That number has grown sharply in ABC News/Washington Post polls, from a low of 32 percent in a 2004 survey of registered voters, advancing to a narrow majority for the first time only two years ago, and now up again to a significant majority for the first time.
Most Americans, moreover, say the U.S. Constitution should trump state laws on gay marriage, a question now before the U.S. Supreme Court. And in another fundamental shift just 24 percent now see homosexuality as a choice, down from 40 percent nearly 20 years ago. Its a view that closely relates to opinions on the legality of same-sex marriage.
Intensity of sentiment about gay marriage also shows considerable change in this poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates. In 2004, strong opponents outnumbered strong supporters by a broad 34 percentage points. Today strong supporters are ascendant, outnumbering strong opponents by 11 points.
CHANGE Results of this survey extend evidence of a remarkable transformation in public attitudes. Views on basic social issues often move slowly, if at all. Support for gay marriage, though, has gone from 47 percent to todays 58 percent in just the last three years culminating a period of change first endorsed by some state courts, then by some political figures, notably with Hillary Clinton expressing support for same-sex marriage today, and Barack Obama doing the same last May, a position he went on to underscore in his second inaugural address in January.

I guess it depends on where you live, there was a scientific poll done by one of the colleges here in West Virginia that found opposition to gay marriage had actually gone UP slightly since the last poll, from 68% opposed in 2007 to 72% opposed in 2012. Of course West Virginia is very socially conservative and does tend to buck national trends.
Absolutely on target. Morality is not determined by polls. Marriage is a religious rite, then it is a legal contract. The contract has no function other than to insure the safety and protection of children resulting from the marriage.
Once the leftists took over the government schools the end result was ordained.
We now have several generations who have been brainwashed from kindergarten through post graduate school.
Only a small percentage are strong enough to break free of the liberal indoctrination they receive and able to think for themselves.
There will be no going back short of a major SHTF disaster.
I doubt very much we will ever see another non-leftist in the Presidency.
Especially once the politicians grant amnesty to 30 million illegal aliens.
I see the only option as “Going Galt” right in your own home, in your own life.
There is no Hidden Valley in the mountains waiting for us and the Moocher Hordes already outnumber us..
Fixed it
We have a winner!!!!
Recall the threats against Scotus as it deliberated Obamacare. Recall Hussein's threat at his first state of the union show. Anyone who thinks Scotus' independence isn't bought by supporting leftist policies and striking down irritating state laws isn't paying attention.
This poll, just like all the election polls that people claimed were "skewed" (but which turned out to be correct) attempts to get the most accurate cross-section of respondents, corresponding to the country as a whole, as is possible.
America as we know it is over. Maybe it’s time to find another country, and escape the judgement coming on this one.
DID YOU POLL GOD???????
All of which proves how easily the opinions of the sheeple can be swayed. God help us.
The media is pushing a pole...
Fake polls, designed to demoralize.
That is all this is. Psyops.
Polls also show that the low information voters think that over 24% of the population is gay (courtesy of homosexualist dominated media and academia).
The dirty secret is that the sex positive agenda advocates don't give a rat's ass as to whether it is "genetic" or "choice". If it feels good, do him. They are for sexual experimentation, smashing monogamy, smashing the patriarchy. It has little to do with sexual "fulfillment". It is an angry liberal attack on "The Establishment". And when free love leaves you feeling empty and sick inside, take some drugs.
It is being pushed down our throats no matter what anyone thinks. It is a done deal. Don’t believe me? Check out how many television shows are openly pushing the homosexual agenda. Where do the low information voters get their information? From Television. It’s nothing more than getting your toe in the door. Once that happens it’s a matter of time until the door is all the way open. Sad, sad world we live in.
You could not be more wrong - and your stunning disdain for "social issues" could not be more compatible with Free Republic. Did you not get the memo? Jim has made it abundantly clear that FR stands for life, traditional marriage, and the nuclear family.
Your naive denial notwithstanding, Marriage and the family constitute the foundations of society. Free Republic is courageously standing against the tide of those who would enforce the celebration of homosexuality, eventually and unavoidably leading to the social opprobrium and criminalization of all those who support intolerant "hate speech" (traditional marriage).
There are doubtlessly other forums which would support your willingness to jettison the moral foundations of society so long as - presumably - it does not affect your pocketbook.
Forced culture change, just like abortion:
On June 26, 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court in a 6-3 decision in Lawrence v. Texas struck down the Texas same-sex sodomy law, ruling that this private sexual conduct is protected by the liberty rights implicit in the due process clause of the United States Constitution.
Next will be the ending of prohibitions against brother - brother, sister-mother, 10 year old girls-any age man. You're right, it's not marriage, it's 'defining deviancy down'.
In 1993, Moynihan wrote a report entitled, "How We've Become Accustomed to Alarming Levels of Crime and Destructive Behavior," We've been doing the deviancy down limbo for 20 years.
It's of all adultsm, not likely voters. Was it taken during the day? We don't know anything about the quality of this. The breakdown isn't accurate and skews the poll.
Dems s/b 31, GOP 29 and Indep 40. Junk poll as far as politicians are concerned. It' pushing, not polling.
They must need a headline. I know here in IL they're working on passing SSM.
Agreed, what we are now seeing is a snowball effect where a lot of people have determined that they don’t want to be latecomers to supporting gay marriage let alone standing in the minority when the issue is finally “settled”.
It’ll be interesting what the next step will be ( probably polygamy, rebranded as “multiple spouse marriage” or something else more innocuous to soften the concept), and how society reacts. There’s definitely a breaking point out there where people will finally stand up and say “no further”. But how far out is that?
You are so correct. Leftists depend on having some cause to champion. Next likely thing(s): pederasty, bestiality, polyamory,....who knows what?...but they'll think of something.
