Inside a small Steubenville, Ohio, courtroom filled with sobbing and exhausting emotion, Judge Thomas Lipps found Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond guilty Sunday of raping an intoxicated 16-year-old girl. Lipps sentenced both defendants to a minimum of one year in a youth correctional institute with the determination for a longer sentence coming from child-service experts.

Mays received an additional year for transmission of nude photos, to be served after his rape sentence is completed. Mays and Richmond also will have to register as sex offenders for the rest of their lives.

"It provides a great incentive to do well," said Lipps, who could have ordered Mays and Richmond to remain behind bars until they turned 21.

Drunk on their own small-town greatness, they operated unaware of common decency until they went too far, wrote too much, bragged too many times and, finally, on a cold Sunday morning, were hauled out of a small third-floor courtroom as a couple of common criminals.

Their ride to the Scioto Juvenile Correctional Facility was waiting for them out back, two floors down, out in the real world.

Yes one year. The judge may have received a call (and more) from Obama.

... with the determination for a longer sentence coming from child-service experts.

I’m not sure what exactly this means, but I hope that it means that they’ll be there till they turn 21.

“minimum of one year in a youth correctional institute.”

Boy, they really treat their jocks like royalty.

It means that unless they kill one of the guards at the youth facility they will be out in a year on good bevavior.

That’s what it means.

The Judge also said no contact with the girl they rape until they are 21 years of age. Aint that cute.

If they were meant to be at the facility until they turn 21 , that would have been unnecessary.

When you fail as a society to impart morality, when that morality is chased away and replaced with what fictionally passes as “reasoning” and steal from the human spirit the guidepost that is enduring and eternal then you can expect failure moments like this to be common place. Neither of these two young men fit the “violent criminal” motif, neither “seem” to be the hoodlum type, BUT, lacking moral base and fortitude they will act upon urges once more easily controlled with a healthy respect and fear of what is wrong and a desire to uphold a good and decent set of standards. One where the man looks upon a woman as someone to be respected, put on a pedestal and revered and PROTECTED.
I am broken hearted for their families, but more so for the girl who paid a terrible price...she has her own issues to face, clearly, but NONE of them should have included what those boys did to her, her indiscretion did not convey license for them in any way whatsoever.

When you fail as a society to impart morality

The failure was at the parents level. And that goes in case one of the biological parents weren't around, in that case, they are ESPECIALLY responsible. And the parents of the victim shouldn't be spared from judgement.

what is really sad is how many other young people stood around and laughed and didn't lift a finger to help this gir?..I'm thinking there had to be dozens of young men and young women who watched or knew it was going on.....

I do NOT DISAGREE with you, I am speaking to us as a whole...God is GONE from our schools...Morality is NOT part of the equation, it is NOT supported in PUBLIC anymore and I expect all would know this difference.

YES, the parents are responsible, more so the young man as he does KNOW that this was wrong but felt comfortable enough to make this choice. Our moral fabric is torn, our strong societal fabric is not nearly what it was...we need to return to it.

And when parents abdicate their responsibilities, something is going to fill that void, and that thing is big government.

In this instance I am going to assume “intoxicated” means passed out drunk.

In this messed up culture, at age 16/17 and you cannot induce a hormone fueled teenage girl into consensual sex... you’re TOTAL losers. What’s the matter guys ?... You got no guile, and you got no game.

I agree...but remember...those parents are products of our modern day society. That society has REJECTED God in the public square. While they are responsible I do say that society has rejected it wholesale and we are only now beginning to reap our reward for such.

There was also a house full of people who did nothing and said nothing. Plus the parents who owned the homes and allowed these parties to go on.
