Texas Senator Ted Cruz's question to California Democratic Senator Diane Feinstein on the Second Amendment in a March 14 hearing forced MSNBC hosts into conniptions,
At the heart of the congressional debate are the questions: Does the Second Amendment prohibit the federal government from passing laws related to firearms, leaving the role exclusively to the states? Or does the Second Amendment grant Congress the authority to pass laws banning guns whenever it believes it appropriate?
The Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights provides that “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” The term, “the right of the people,” when the framers included it in the Bill of Rights, they used it as a term of art. That same phrase, “the right of the people,” is found in the First Amendment: “the right of the people to peaceably assemble and petition their government for a redress of grievances.” It's also found in the Fourth Amendment, “the right of the people to free from unreasonable searches and seizures.” And the question I would pose to the senior Senator from California [Feinstein] is, would she deem it consistent with the Bill of Rights for Congress to engage in the same endeavor that we are contemplating doing with the Second Amendment in the context of the First or the Fourth Amendment? Namely, would she consider it constitutional for Congress to specify that the First Amendment shall apply only to the following books, and shall not apply to the books that Congress has deemed outside the protection of the First Amendment?
The Harvard Law School-educated Cruz's question sent MSNBC's Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough into an on-air meltdown, where Scarborough essentially argued that it doesn't matter what the Second Amendment says.

Well, sure. So was I. But let's not forget that Cruz wound up neck and neck with Lt Gov David Dewhurst in the primary, which triggered a runoff election. Sarah Palin's vocal support for Cruz was one of the factors which helped tip the vote in his favor in that race.

They were on board with Cruz only after Sarah came out with her endorsement. She’s not from nowhere, she was a governor and she ran for VP and she is fabulous and consistent. Even if she lacks the education and language skills. She is passionate and people listen to her.

Actually, I think the debates were a game changer. Dewhurst did not do well. He is not a good speaker. Cruz ate his lunch. It was downhill from there with Dewhurst. He is GOPe, BTW.

In all of this discussion what is amazing to me is that the rock of our Nation so to speak is not what people usually argue/discuss. Rather the entire framework of the Constitution is contained and constrained in/by the very first words of the Constitution commonly called the preamble i.e. “ WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES, in order to form a more perfect union................., do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” . How much clearer and/or forceful could an intent be expressed. THE PEOPLE by being the force behind the origin of this Nation are first and foremost above the Supreme Court, the Congress, and the President. What the People wrote and expressed in Their Constitution as such cannot be abrogated by any of the three or all three in concert. The three are beholden to the PEOPLE and are to serve the PEOPLE.

At the time of the Revolution, the continentals had better, more advanced rifles than the red coats. They were accurate out to a couple hundred yards, while those of the red coats were barely accurate at a quarter of that distance.
There were also many citizens who owned ships equipped with cannons. No one questioned their right to 'keep and bear' such powerful weapons. They needed them to protect against pirates on the open sea.
Essentially, the people had better weapons than their government, in many cases.
The 2nd Amendment does not grant the right to keep and bear arms. All humans are born with that right as a condition of their existence. Like the other amendments, it merely puts the government on notice that these rights are natural, and beyond their jurisdiction or authority.
To answer your question, it should go without saying that individuals have a right to keep and bear arms of whatever description best serve the purpose of protecting them against those who would do them harm. The real question is, where do The People's employees get the authority to limit the capacity, description, or power of their employer's weapons? The employees have NO intrinsic rights, and serve only at the pleasure of their masters, the governed.
It's troubling to me that any conservative would openly wonder about the definition of the word, 'arms', or question the Framers' intent with regards to the 2A. The Framers didn't get to redefine the language, and neither do modern liberals. The word means what it means - in any language you care to speak it.
This is the kind of crap that split the party. This is the same crap that caused the lost of the election and got King Obama reelected. Keep up the negative against the real conservatives and your friends might cause another loss.
