Saudi Arabia has authorised regional governors to approve executions by firing squad as an alternative to public beheading, the customary method of capital punishment in the kingdom, the Arab News reported on Monday . The English-language daily gave no explanation.
But another newspaper, Al Youm, reporting the measure on Sunday, said the reason for the change was a shortage of swordsmen.
...
"A shortage in sworsdmen and their unavailability in a number of areas" meant the executioners had to travel long distances sometimes to get to the place of executions, making them sometimes late, the newspaper reported the circular as saying.

If the Saudis run out of food.... might they eat children?
I amazed by the efficient and resourceful Saudi Gvmt. Budget cuts without the service cuts. Whooda thought.

How many swordsman do they really need? Look, when you've had to chop off the head of a thief up near Kuwait on Tuesday, spend all Wednesday driving across Arabia with no ac, on Thursday executing a witch near Yemen, and then trying to beat traffic home in time for Friday prayers you'll be more sympathetic.

I wonder if there is a union the executioners are aligned with?
Are they the Head Loppers Union, Local 100?

Don’t let Obama see the word swordsman. He would butcher it like he did corpseman.

The Brits invented a machine for this several hundred years ago. I thought the Saudis were more up on the latest technologies.
They probably can’t use guillotines because of existing Labor Agreements with the government.

The condemned are really having a tough time loitering about awaiting the late swordsman to arrive. Then he has to spend time honing his blade. Of course, beheading by means of rifle rounds also tends to be very time consuming.

This may explain the sudden huge surge in gov't purchases of ammunition.

That would be the International Brotherhood of De-Nogginizers. The local in Riyadh is No. 782, I believe. ;-)

The swordsmen with seniority make it hard for a new guy to get a head on the job.
