I loved “Downtown” when it came out. I was in the 7th grade at an exam school and was studying LATIN!

A side note about the Funk Brothers...I met two of these wonderful gentlemen at a Herman Cain Rally....and a few weeks later they provided the music for Rick Santorum!

I recognized them and spent the rest of the afternoon shootin’ the breeze and talkin’ shop with them.

You lucky lady! I feel the same way when I sit down and talk with my favorite chamber musicians.

When I first heard "Downtown", I was floored by the beauty of the tune. Tony Hatch was one amazing composer.

Rod Argent had scored a hit with his group, the Zombies, earlier with “She’s Not There”. Argent was one of the early practitioners of electric keyboard, and that made his sound special. This came in at #6 on March 9, 1965.

The Zombies: “Tell Her No”

Not half bad covers of White Room and Sunshine. Adrian Gurvitz was actually a competent axeman, but most of the other songs are unremarkable and the drum solo is downright tedious. Ginger was riding the white horse and it shows.

I have met some real “Rock Stars”...and most of them have been REALLY nice people. (Members of led Zep, iron maiden, Cinderella, Peter Frampton’s Band, Van Morrison’s sax player, The afore mentioned Funk Brothers, David Currier from “Boston”,etc)

You are right about “Downtown”; the melody is beautiful.

“I know a Place”, another Petula Clark song, also has a great melody.

I spent the better part of the afternoon clearing the ice off the driveway.

It was nice to be out in a t-shirt.

Who could forget the Beatles? Today remembered by Generation X and Y as Paul McCartney’s first backup band, they defined the Sixties. To his credit, McCartney agonized over his songs just as Gershwin and the other great songwriters did. This came in at #5 on March 9, 1965.

The Beatles: “Eight Days a Week”
