Officials: 80 Percent Of Recent NYC High School Graduates Cannot Read
CBS NY ^

Posted on 03/07/2013 3:11:25 PM PST by SMGFan

It’s an education bombshell.

Nearly 80 percent of New York City high school graduates need to relearn basic skills before they can enter the City University’s community college system.

The number of kids behind the 8-ball is the highest in years, CBS 2′s Marcia Kramer reported Thursday.

When they graduated from city high schools, students in a special remedial program at the Borough of Manhattan Community College couldn’t make the grade.

They had to re-learn basic skills — reading, writing and math — first before they could begin college courses.

A friend asked me to tutor her son.

I found out that this high school kid could not read. He could not write. He’d never been exposed to phonics. He didn’t have the slightest clue as to what went into a five paragraph essay.

I needed to start him out in the most basic program to build him up and teach him the correct way to use the most basic English. I wanted to teach him phonics.

He complained to his mother and my friend came to me and told me that I was ‘demeaning’ her son.

So he was not taught.

He had a willing tutor. He had someone who was willing to nug out the hard stuff and get him up to snuff.

But his pride was hurt. That, his mother could not stand.

She pulled him away from me, to protect his ego.

I pray for this young man.

What is worse is that many highly educated people don’t understand common sense. Tons of knowledge, little wisdom.
*********
Post of the Day!!!! A variation of that theme is there are tons of people who know everything, but produce nothing.

Only ~61% of those entering NYC high schools even graduate. So it's likely that only about 12% of NYC kids can read.

........................”In its defense, the NYC Department of Education said it has raised high school graduation rates by 40 percent over the last seven years. And that the number of students needing remedial courses to do college work has declined slightly — by half a percentage point overall”............................

Gee! I wonder if there’s a clue to the problem in that statement?
Thirty nine and one half percent more graduates that don’t have a clue!

I had enough curiosity to teach myself how to read before I got to the 1st grade.

What is wrong with people?

Considering that 18% of New York city voted republican in 2012, my guess is that republicans haven’t been a part of the cause leading to this human tragedy.

the liberal answer is to give them a raise.

as long as these kids hate Republicans, mock Christians, know how to use a condom by 11 (and they HAD better be sleeping around too!) then liberals will call it a success.

So big deal....they don’t need any reading skills, just enough ability to be able to read their Facebook and twitter feeds...

After all...Micky D’s has a picture menu....

What other social skills do you need...?
