'He was best known for battling the Daleks as one of the best-loved Doctor Whos.
But now it has been revealed that Jon Pertwee was a real-life secret agent years before he donned the Time Lords cape.
The actor, who died in 1996 aged 76, was a senior intelligence agent during the Second World War and reported directly to Winston Churchill. He was also recommended for another role by James Bond creator Ian Fleming and proved to be an expert in using a range of 007-like gadgets, including a smoking pipe that fired bullets and handkerchiefs containing secret maps.
The revelations in a long-lost tape-recorded interview confirm that Pertwees wartime activities were as remarkable as his acting career, which saw him play the third incarnation of the Doctor between 1970 and 1974. Pertwee said he kept silent about the nature of his covert role with the Naval Intelligence Division for decades for fear of breaching the Official Secrets Act.'

Pertwee was great as the Doctor, but I’m still partial to Tom Baker.
I had the honor of meeting Mr. Pertwee at a Dr. Who convention many years ago. He was a lovely person and a delightful storyteller. I had no idea he helped save the world in real life. The saying is true. Real heroes don’t call attention to themselves.
Explains his Bond-like behavior as The Doctor.
I wonder if actor Sean Pertwee is his son?
Yes, Sean is Jon’s son. I particularly liked Sean’s portrayal as the Sheriff, in the videos made of the “Cadfael” series of books by Ellis Peters.
He is. Patrick Troughton’s son is an actor as well.
I saw him in a corny werewolf movie. The suspense was good at the beginning though. Thanks.
This is an amazing story. I knew Jon well for a long time, and still miss him so much. I’m glad this new Dr Who 50th anniversary is bringing his story back.
save for later
I always liked Jon’s magnificent head of snowy hair!!
