MIAMI - A fireball lit up the Florida sky Sunday evening.
People from as far south as Key West and as far north as Jacksonville reported seeing the flash of light.
Accounts of the sighting came in around 6:45 p.m.
There was a flash in the sky in Pompano Beach, wrote Jill Dexter.
Terrell Forney of Local 6 sister station WPLG-TV said he saw the fireball as he was heading north on the Florida Turnpike.
"It appeared to be some sort of firework at first glance, but there was a white streak in the air followed by some sort of...orange and green glow," said Forney. "And it literally disappeared in about 2 or 3 seconds."
Others said it looked like a bright light and possibly a meteor.
Clear skies Sunday made it easy for people to see the fireball, which was essentially a very bright meteor. Several thousand occur daily, but mainly over oceans and unpopulated areas. Fireballs can leave a glowing trail, especially at night. It's possible that they can strike the Earth's surface.

Wonder what Comet SION er ISON will be like.
ISON?
LOL!
I think this is how Battleship, Cloverfield, and Battle Los Angeles.
I think this is how Battleship, Cloverfield, and Battle Los Angeles started. Fireballs all over the planet, then aliens blasting at us.
LOL... that brings back some laughs from last year before it fizzled out.
The sky is falling!
(The sky IS falling)
..never mind, thinking of Elenin, but I’m sure the reaction will be just as funny.
That big asteroid might be headed your way after all!
I suspect the handiwork of either the Nestene Consciousness or the Cybermen...
About time! Only two months late now.
Has a lot of connotations, huh.

Some reporters have started calling ISON the “Comet of the Century,” but Don Yeomans of NASA Near-Earth Object Program thinks that’s premature.
“I’m old enough to remember the last ‘Comet of the Century’,” he says. In 1973, a distant comet named Kohoutek looked like it would put on a great show, much like ISON. The actual apparition was such a let-down that Johnny Carson made jokes about it on the Tonight Show. It fizzled, says Yeomans. Comets are notoriously unpredictable.
“Comet ISON has the potential to live up to the hype, but it also has the potential to do nothing,” agrees Battams.

Name
The name of the comet is simply, C/2012 S1. The addition of “(ISON)” after its name, merely identifies the organization where its discovery was made, the Russia-based International Scientific Optical Network. If the same organization had discovered a similar, but unrelated comet one day later, that one would have been named “C/2012 S2 (ISON)”. Nevertheless, media sources, incorrectly interpreting the parenthetical identification as a nickname, have taken to calling the comet by the location of its discovery,[18][19][20] and consequently, this name could persist in use even though it would become confusing with later discoveries made from the same location. The names of famous short-period comets usually identify the astronomers who discovered them or clearly identified them as a periodic comet, such as Comet Halley or Comet Swift-Tuttle. If that convention were followed, this should be the Comet Nevski-Novichonok or C/2012 S1 Nevski-Novichonok.

It would appear this Meteor violated the “no fly zone” around our president during his golfing vacation.
Funny thing is that he really *did* attain eternal life in the beyond, on the internet that is.
Dang! I missed it.
Or should i say:
hallelujah...it missed ME!
YIKES.
Last year it was the Chinese firing a missile off the coast of California and now Florida. They’re getting really bold......./h
