MERIDIAN Heritage Middle School went into lockdown Thursday morning after a report of an armed suspect inside the school. A few hours later, police confirmed that the suspect did not have a weapon, but rather a military-style folding shovel. The report of an armed individual came in to the Ada County Sheriffs Office around 9 a.m. The weapon was initially believed to be a type of ax. The lockdown at Heritage, in Joint School District No. 2, and surrounding schools, lasted almost two hours. There were no injuries. The shovel was brought into the school from a car in the parking lot, by an eighth-grade student at the request of his teacher. Neither are being criminally charged, a press release from the Meridian Police Department confirmed.

Time call a spade a spade!

****After all we all know how many lives have been taken by ‘military’ assault shovels. /sarc ****
I was taught in survival school (USAF) that the small shovel was a better weapon for close encounters than an axe.
I’ve read that the shovel was also a better arm for use in trench warfare if the enemy gets in your trench.
If you watch the old ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT you will see them defend an invasion of the trench with shovels.
What the Hell is wrong with the principal, the PD, and the DA up there? Why aren't they being charged? It's a very serious allegation, carrying a "military-style" folding shovel. Who knows how this could have ended if they weren't caught. Book 'em, Danno!
Sort of a form of horseshoes.
Camoflage makes anything look scary.
WTH! Did you guys not read the article? It was a “folding” shovel for cryin’ out loud. Much deadlier than your standard fixed blade shovel. Thank goodness it didn’t have a grenade launcher, pistol grip, flash hider, barrel shroud or the ability to hold a “high-capacity” “”clip””. By the way, what was the response time for the LEO’s to get there?
Hmmm! Why did the teacher want a shovel???? Sounds suspicious to me. They should investigate the “indoctrinator” but thanks to the teachers union, nothing would happen anyway.
Yeah they were in a tizzy at UofM the other day (the 14th) over someone spotted wearing camo and a gas mask and carrying a sign about love being in the air.
Idaho = Potato(e)s + entrenching tool = ammo for potato(e) assault weapons!
Where is Nappy when you need a FED SWAT TEAM or maybe a “armed Drone”?
The (e) is because like Quayle, I was never sure. /sarc.
This is beyond stupid. A folding shovel?!!
I’m grateful this didn’t happen in LA. Some students may have been shot.
This is nothing to joke about.
It was a semi-automatic assault shovel with a folding stock, er, handle.
It could be easily reloaded simply by pushing it into the ground.
We need to pass a law making schools “Shovel-Free Zones”.
That’ll fix the problem.
” Neither are being criminally charged”
Kind of them for not ruining the lives of innocent people.
Overreacting is as stupid as underreacting.
The media loves to promote anxiety. They live for it.
Did you mean Idaho(e)? I didn’t have a problem with Quayl(e). Misrepresenting an (e) is far worse than admitting that you smoked dope and did “some” cocaine. I guess!? Love me some tater guns. Boom Baby! I also luv me some skeet shootin’ with a black powder shotgun too............. Just sayin’.
Why isn’t the press reporting if the kid took a drink of water while carrying the assault shovel? That should at least double his prison term.
Perhaps it would be better if law enforcement and security professionals were designing the school security and lock down policies rather than school bureaucrats and that these policies be realistically tested.
At least the kid had his homework assignment shovel ready.
One day me and pa were out and about. A badger run across the road and jumped into the adjacent ditch. It was late enough in the year and I told pa I wanted that hide. So he stopped and I got a fixed blade shovel out of the back , jumped in the ditch, and took off after that badger. Now anyone who has chased badgers before knows they will only run away until they have had enough. So I was a ready when he turned on me and I whanged him over the head with that shovel. Loaded him in the back and went on over to the place to skin ‘im. Got out of the pickup and stepped to the rear and Mr. Badger came a boiling out. He acted a little mad. Maybe more than a little. And dagnubit, he got away...
