So Downton Abbey‘s message is an anti-class warfare one. The fact is that the spirit of the critics is hard left, and maybe that’s why Downton Abbey makes them so angry, because the success of the series shows that this group does not speak for America.
It also shows something equally important to the future of our culture: that there is no inherent need for good TV to be left of center. Stories sympathetic to virtue, preservation of property and admiration of nobility and of wealth can be told beautifully and to wide audiences, and I suspect they will be more and more in the future.

I watched a PBS special the other night on Highclere Castle which it turns out is used for scenes in Downtun Abbey (which I have never watched). Apparently the guy who does the show is a good friend of the current Earl. They did interviews with the Earl and his wife and it sounds like the show is actually based on their ancestors.

Yes, and I used it when I saw this crap. Which is why I posted that nothing makes me change channels faster than seeing homosexuals.
It depends on the context for me. I hate the tripe that the networks promote about homosexuals. But the fact exists that throughout history homosexuals have been THERE. To avoid the subject entirely seems like historical revisionism. There is a difference between promoting homosexuality and portraying homosexuality. Plus I am pretty certain that DA is not must see TV for the young set.
A homosexual is portrayed in the Abbey family manor as well as an Irish marxist rebel. They are woven into the narrative in a way that you don't feel they are there for shock value.....nor leftist propaganda value. Indeed, it's just the opposite.
There are other slices of life.....a moneyed brash American relative, and a young family member involved with a married man and involved in the "shocking" new world of jazz and the beginning of the post-WW1 flapper era. Two murder mysteries are woven into the plot, and, horrors....the story line of a prostitute.
I suggest the critics of this show confine themself to Merry Melodies cartoons and Mother Goose stories if the ups and downs, good and bad of real life offend them so terribly.
Rush himself stated on the air that he's watched every episode without fail....that's good enough for me. If he was offended, he would have tuned out.

It came early in the series; I thought "if they keep on with this gay story-line I'm outta here".
But the gay man was rebuffed shortly after when he tried an advance on one of the nobles. And then he turned out to be the most tawdry character in the series.
I'm with you...I can't stand how they try to sneak homosexuality into these TV shows. But at least with Downton they didn't continue with that story-line...at least up to the end of Season 2.

Daughter recommended Downton Abbey. Picked first 2 seasons up on Amazon Prime for free. I’m hooked. Can’t wait for season three to hit Prime.

I haven’t watched it since I haven’t bought the DVDs yet (no TV and on dial-up). I was hesitant at first of season 3 because of McLaine, but if there is a homo scene, then I’m not buying this season. Glad I waited. I’ll spend my money on something else.
It’s not what you are thinking. Thomas is goaded into believing what is not true, he gets rejected.
What a great show! It is entertainent TV as TV should be! No filth, no bad language, no gratutious sex or violence, no trendy adolescent plot lines for the maturity challenged, no PC nonsense. It is simply marvelous entertainment with terrific actors and great costuming!
We can't wait until they post Season Two. We check constantly for it.

Regarding liberal friends: Not everybody lives in Texas. (And I used to live there so I know whereof I speak.) I live in Pennsylvania. If I completely avoided everyone who has liberal tendencies here I would have no human contact whatsoever. I have been friends with this woman for 30 years, since I was a much less conservative minded youthful person. And I have issues with her yes. And she does with me. But we remain friends. This is the kind of thing that drives me crazy about FR. Anytime you post ANYTHING, somebody criticizes you if you are not 100 percent partyline conservative. Even with something as innocent as Downton Abbey.
Regarding the gay story line: Wake up people. Gay people exist. I’ve been aware of this since I was a small child. Both my parents were in the the theater, and often had gay people in our home.I’m 52 years old so this was long before gay rights. That didn’t make me liberal. But it also taught me that acknowledging that gay people exist is not a sin. Even in a TV program. Watch the entire series and then tell me it has a gay agenda. It doesn’t.

In the first or second episode of Season 1, there is a willing kiss between Thomas and a male visitor to Downton Abbey. Then, there isn’t another one, I don’t believe, until later in Season 3 (Episode 5 or 6?) when Thomas comes on to the footman, both of whom have been set up by Ms. O’Brien’s treachery.

We dropped cable a few years ago, before Downton Abbey began. I had, however noted that most if not all of my ‘facebook’ friends ‘like’ Downton Abbey. Those friends are pretty equally divided between liberal and conservative. (maybe even lean a tad more to the liberal side).
Last month I decided to catch a movie online at Netflix. Lo and behold, there was Series I of Downton Abbey. It took NO TIME to become addicted. Such a good show. Everything about it, the story and character development, casting, scenery, costume is just wonderful. Certainly visually better than Upstairs/Downstairs of the same general era and theme.
Unfortunately, netflix hasn’t yet gotten Series II, and III is just wrapping up for the season. I don’t know how long till we can see II, but I am looking forward to it. Suggest you start at the beginning, then catch up as you can.
