Stan Hartzler has been a math teacher for a long time. The 40-year teacher has written textbooks, taught college math, and given hundreds of presentations on how to teach his subject.
So when he was hired in August 2012 to launch a robust attack on Luling Independent School District's failing math scores, he brought a solid understanding of what his students needed.
But Hartzler would soon become a casualty in a growing state controversy when, shortly after his hire, his superintendent adopted a new teaching system called CSCOPE. It organized each day's classroom topics minute to minute and provided scripted talking points and lessons.
He required Hartzler to use it exclusively, despite Hartzler's protests.
Hartzler tried.
He used every quadratic equation, every calculator exercise, and all the algebra tile work.
But it felt like a concoction of leftovers that would seriously harm students particularly the disadvantaged ones because it left out so much.
"The course in algebra is not there," he said. "I regard this as being fraudulent."

“Before everyone gets too bent out of shape, the answer is in the sentence above.
Even here in Texas, we have jackasses that end up in front of a classroom full of kids. “
If you can answer why they HIDE it from the SBOE and parents, then, maybe, we wouldn’t get so angry. As to crappy teachers...I’m with you all the way there, but that’s not relevant to this story - the crappy teachers will be crappy with or without CSCOPE.
what Pikachu Dad means is this:
the textbooks are a HUGE RACKET, the teachers (or college professors) who teach the class write the textbook, put it on the list as required for the course and make a fortune off it. The books just for my kids’ high school courses are $500! Then next year, they put out a new edition and change a couple sentences and require everybody to buy the new one.
Still, textbooks are better than online crapola
One retiree said she thinks it's part of a greater plan to purposely "dumb down" the curriculum -- and kids -- and then bring about a *national* curriculum. Isn't that convenient?
If I'm understanding the numbers correctly, CSCOPE receives about $7/kid for 3 million who are "contracted"....that's $21 million - of OUR tax $$ - going to CSCOPE to indoctrinate our kids!!
I know what he means. I will say this. It is a fact, based upon most recent PT meeting, that if our school goes to the Ipad it won’t be because of saving money on textbooks. There is no savings, as the textbooks companies are charging just as much.
A racket like that will not give up territory nor revenue.
Heavy texts a problem?
The kids are suffering too much?
We carried ours a mile to school uphill both ways in the snow.
And weee Loved It! Weee loved it!
Do you even understand what CSCOPE is? Have you read the article - or anything - about CSCOPE?
“And they cant change content overnight...”
AND, if you lose electricity or, God forbid,an EMP goes off, you still have a BOOK to read.
I fear what this generation would do if their electricity went out, and they didn’t have their Kindle, or their games, or their Facebook.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
This is another one of those must see topics, so I'm pinging out both lists.
While this is certainly a GREAT reason to homeschool, homeschoolers need to be aware of what their children are being protected from, especially if they are considering sending their children to public school for any reason.

...and that day is coming. Both Iran and the Norks can put satellites into orbit, and both are perfecting their nukes. We will get pulsed, I just hope it’s a liberal city that gets to deal with it.

And when your computer dies or the power goes out, your back up is....?
oh and let me say something else-—this deal about taking multiple choice tests online is a bunch of garbage. Kids do better with the number two pencil, the booklet and the fill in the circle test sheet.
Oh please. The computer is not going to die. The electricity has so many backups it’s not even. . .
You are the dinosaur.
Just spoke w sis two days ago in LI.
Mult million $ income and systems. same ans other mutual sibs.
She said that for the word “generator” to even be part of every day vocab was ridiculous, but true. Said the reports from town were that gas lines were down.
she laughed. Said no one’s going anywhere. Had just heard about the ewather. Said she has a fireplace (clean), and a cord of wood.
And games. She is not a reader.
She said they were all about to cannabalize each other for gas last go around (Sandy).
Saidn they’d been without power - comm out, no computers, refrigeration )not a prob in a blizzard, niether is water) for weeks at a time three times in the past year.
Books are the second thing on my list.
—They are godless in their worldview by law and court ruling. I the teachers are sneaking in bits of a Christian worldview then the teachers are teaching an important lesson: Christians are sneaky.
—Your county's children are being trained in their local GODLESS government school to think and reason godlessly. They must just to cooperate within the godless classroom, read the godless textbooks, and do their godless assignments.
—Your county's schools are a socialist entitlement.
— Your county's teachers were indoctrinated in Marxist dominated colleges of education.
—Your county's schools are a price-fixed cartel monopoly that gives it service away for tuition-free. They are creating a very hostile business environment for private alternatives. But down on the government's Animal Farm government teachers sleep in the farmer's house. CEOs are prosecuted for cartel activity and get to sleep in prison.
— Your county's schools are the very definition of an archetypal socialist-entitlement and the children who attend risk learning to be comfortable with socialism ( and now even Marxism.) it is embedded in the teacher's training and in many aspects of the curriculum.
—Your county's schools treat children in many ways like prisoners, Their First Amendment Rights are violated every minute of every day. Children who are treated like prisoners risk learning to be compliant socialist prisoners of the state.
And....Finally. ..Your church's government teachers doing great harm because naive parents see them in church. They **FALSELY** conclude that if sweet Mrs. Honey Bun ( who sings in the church choir and loves her cat) teaches in the local GODLESS, socialist-entitlement, Marxist dominated, and prison-like school, then they can't be **that** bad. ( Yes, they are **that** bad.)
—Your local government schools are NOT politically, culturally, or religiously neutral. It is impossible for any education to be neutral. Such a state can not exist in the mind of any sentient human.
— The Barna Foundation studies show that the outcomes for Christian children, from highly active Christian homes, are horrendous! More than 85% of children from these Christian homes fail to be active in their faith 2 years after graduating from their local GODLESS and socialist school. My guess is that outcomes for children from less active Christian homes are appalling in the extreme.
—It is IMPOSSIBLE to reform your local schools. When in the history of mankind was it ever possible to reform godlessness, socialist-entitlement, Marxism, price-fixing cartel and monopoly practices, **national** union domination of every county's curriculum and policies, trashing of basic First Amendment human rights and prison-like treatment of children whose only crime was to be born?
My personal decision: I consider government schooling to be sooooooo evil for the child and such a threat to our nation's continuing freedom that I will not have a government teacher for a friend. I **SHUN** them! I don't have abortion workers for friends either.
:) You know there was sarcasm there, right?
And a serious lack of proofreading.
Power comes and power goes. I think that goes back to Shakespeare.
You could take textbooks from the 50s through early 70s and have a very good base to teach from for many (most?) subjects. Reading, writing, and arithmetic haven’t changed at all. How long has chemistry and calculus been with us? (I have an extensive math background, but I wouldn’t want to learn from the disorganized crap in today’s math textbooks).
What about the structure and functions of government, i.e. showing how bills are passed, discussing the three branches, etc.? Even history—it’s unwise, I think, to discuss “history” that’s less than 30 years old. I think there needs to be some separation there for emotions to die down.
The modern “focus” on diversity and multiculturalism? Ha! Diverse cultures didn’t create this country with its (still) amazing riches, freedoms, and highest standard of living anywhere. So let’s celebrate a bunch of primitives, eh? What a joke!
Get back to the basics.
I like real books, but the ones now are indeed overpriced and overweight. They are significantly heavier than when I was a kid, maybe because they use thicker paper to accommodate more color pictures?
They could also stand some editing. My son’s math book said that the square root of -25 was -5, for example.
The social studies books tend to have a section in each chapter that is fluff— some tie-in to current life to make it “relevant” that never appears on the test and the student does not want to read for fun. The book could weigh noticeably less if this were omitted.
It is not enough to simply advocate home schooling though it is a start
Currently most of the hard left tolerate home schooling because they’ve realized that it takes their most vocal critics out the classroom. It is a good bargain on their part because they get left alone with the other 98% or so kids that are not in private schools.
Even if you home school your kids, maybe because of it you should run for the local school board. But please, please don’t just mouth old platitudes.
Do a little research about what education is, how it developed and look at the actual research. There is plenty of research exposing why public schools do not work and how the progressives ignore the problem
You have to become educated about education.
Start with the book “Getting it Wrong from the Beginning” by Keirian Egan
http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Wrong-Beginning-Progressivist-Inheritance/dp/030010510X
This is a thin book, you can read it in a couple of hours. Once you understand the problem you won’t have to yell or threaten to make the un-progressive afraid of you.
The book basically argues that progressive education does not work because it is based upon faulty assumptions, or the misinterpretation of valid assumptions. As such it cannot be reformed it must be completely rebooted. What makes it so damning to the educational establishment is that they cannot simply brush off the conclusions as the opinions of Ignorant-White-Christian-Fundimentalist seeking a return to the good days of prohibition and Jim Crow.
This is a book on education that every teacher, and every parent with a child in school should read.
I’ve met people with that attitude and read it too much on FR from certain people who frequent the survival threads that Kartographer pings to.
Sometimes it’s not to easy to be sure....
America is being Punished... the worst is yet to come..
The sad part is....... America deserves it..
75,000,000 plus murdered babies in the most hateful way has recriminations...
God did not do it.. lazy political action did..
When good people do nothing........ THIS HAPPENS..
