Sidenote: Les Rice (1939 — 2010), the composer of this song, was a New York State apple farmer and one-time president of the Ulster County chapter of the Farmers Union. His songs made him well-known to farmers throughout the northeast. Perhaps his most well-known composition is "Banks of Marble" which achieved great popularity, first recorded by Pete Seeger in 1959 and later became a staple of the 60s protest movement covered by Leonard Cohen, The Weavers, Ewan McLennan and a host of others.

This song, written around 1948-49 has seen a resurgence since the 2008 Wall Street crisis.

It took me a while to find this one. Opera Australia did a production of Puccini's "La Boheme" featuring a young cast. This makes sense in that the opera is about young folks in Paris. They set the production in the 1950's rather than the 1840's. The two leads are not only magnificent singers, but good looking too.

This is Mimi's aria in Act 1 followed by the big duet. Have your hanky ready.

Puccini: "La Boheme", two numbers from Act 1
