A good man. I enjoyed his book, especially the part where he said he preferred conservatives over liberals, because liberals don’t care about people, just their stupid, arbitrary cause of the day. RIP, sir. I wish there were more like you.
RIP, Mayor Koch. Thank you for standing up to your party’s leaders when it counted. You were a good man.
He was a reasonable liberal. His political life was before my time but from what I gather, he was and continued to be a reasonable liberal. He had his opinions but seemed genuinely willing to sit down and discuss opposing views in friendly manner.
He was a gun grabber and a gun grabber with his intellect knows damn well that taking guns from Americans would result in tyranny. That was his intent.
He was a decent guy. He was made for the limousine libs in NYC........misguided....voted for Bam twice......! Part of his legacy.
Suddenly, I heard a roar coming from the back of the Great Lawn. When I stood up to look, there was Ed Koch striding through the crowd in his signature shirt sleeves with his arms above his head, both thumbs up.
The crowd treated him like a rockstar. He had pulled NYC back from the brink of financial collapse and everyone showed their appreciation.
He wasn't perfect, but he took a lot of unpopular positions, fought the entrenched powers and won.
RIP, Ed.
RIP, Mr. Mayor...88 was a good run.
Probably one of the last sensible democrats, in politics that is.
R.I.P. Mayor I always enjoyed the forthright way you talked to us.
My favorite Koch story came from his mayoral days. He was getting heckled by the crowd and someone shouted out “we want Lindsay!”, referring to former mayor John Lindsay, who pretty much ran the city into the ground financially with his leftist welfare friendly policies.
Koch said “would everyone who wants John Lindsay please raise your hand?” Quite a few did. Koch then said “DUMMIES!”
He was a good man. May he RIP
His politics may have been left....but he always supported our nation during the War on Terror. And was always pro Israel...rare these days among Jewish Dems
RIP, Mayor.
“How am I doin ?”
What a character
Those were my Manhattan years as well
Godspeed Ed
...back when it was a quiet preference
Too bad he couldn't live to see rue his Obama endorsement good and proper. But he was always a radical leftie on domestic policy anyway.
Probably asking God “How am I doing?” as I type.
Sharpton, 15 Marchers Arrested 500 Protest Police Brutality, Rally Outside Koch's Residence
NEW YORK The Rev. Al Sharpton and 15 others were arrested yesterday when they attempted to cross the East River Drive during a march protesting local injustices to blacks. The arrests came about 5:20 p.m. as Sharpton, along with lawyers Alton Maddox Jr. and C. Vernon Mason, led about 500 people on a march from Harlem to a rally outside Gracie Mansion, the mayor's residence. After his arrest, Sharpton vowed to "agitate every week until we get (Mayor Edward) Koch out."
Decent guy...
Never forget when he said “It still isn’t safe to vote Democrat yet...”
RIP Mr. Mayor...
Somewhere on his headstone, it will most likely read, “How am I doing?”
“...A Democrat and a Liberal, he was the type of thinking Liberal I like to match wits with; ...”
Yeah, he was both of those, and he never struck me as a communist assh*le like most of that party has become.
He was the kind of Dem I remember from my days growing up back in Philly. An old-style Rizzo kind of Dem (and even Rizzo wised up and changed to a Republican).
I still remember the phrase, "Ed Koch eats quiche, but only because it's good for New York."
