Sunstein: Obama Wants 'Second Bill of Rights' (modeled after 1944 FDR State of the Union speech)
Big Government ^ | 28 Jan 2013 | by Breitbart News

Former Obama administration regulatory czar Cass Sunstein has published an op-ed: that the president wants a "second Bill of Rights" alongside the existing one.

Sunstein located the source of Obama's inspiration in Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 1944 State of the Union address, rather than the South African constitution--though the American academics whose writings inspired South Africa's ambitious Bill of Rights could well have taken Roosevelt's proposals as their foundation.

Roosevelt's Second Bill of Rights--not a list of constitutional amendments, but policy goals--was as follows:

In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all regardless of station, race, or creed.

Among these are:

The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the Nation;

The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;

The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;

The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;

The right of every family to a decent home;

The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;

The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;

The right to a good education.

All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being.

This is an EU type of “bill of rights,” which denies innate, God-given rights and instead makes the state the dispenser and arbiter of “rights.”

Disgusting and disgraceful.

There is some debate that a call to a Convention has to be for a specific resolution and that SOLELY that resolution can be discussed and/or ratified.

IF that is the case then I’m ok with it. Otherwise, you speak truth.

“libertarian paternalism.” = “Okay, we’ll let you smoke a little weed if you’ll shut up and let us finish what we’re trying to do here”.

Of course the only way you could even attempt to accomplish this is through command economy dictatorship. At least Obama crowd is no longer even trying to hide its true colors.

"...Often people’s preferences are ill-formed..."

So, "Buttstain", YOU and those like you will shoulder the huge burden of telling us what our preferences SHOULD be, so we can avoid the "ill-formed" ones.

Right. We get it completely.

(BTW, good post...I particularly liked the "Buttstain" monkier...:)

“...Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s 1944 State of the Union address...”

His last, thank God.

Does any one besides Obummer think that anything on that list of garbage is a right? Those are all things to strive for and if you apply yourself and work hard, you stand a pretty good chance of of achieving them. The real Bill of Rights guarantees you that opportunity (but not necessarily that result, sorry, libs).

At least it used to.

Great reference. I actually read large parts of that legislative abortion of which the “framers” are so proud, and it is appalling indeed.

There is no right to take another person’s time or resources without just and fair compensation, therefore, any right that assumes taking from another is not a right. It is an infringement of another’s rights.

The Founders said it correctly: The right to the pursuit of happiness.

For example, pursuing happiness might be for you the pursuit of home ownership, but there is no right for you to take from another to realize your pursuit. Not their time, nor their resources, nor their talents.

Any “right” that requires other people to provide services and/or money, like making them provide a decent house, is not a right at all. Its making those other people a slave. They would be giving up time and labor, a part of their life, literally at bayonet point. All true rights require no else give up their rights. The Constitution restrains government to protect the rights the people already have.

It’s not a “right” if it requires an involuntary sacrifice of another person’s time or wealth.

I had someone recently who was horrified at my scoffing about FDR being cited as one of the best presidents in US history.

As far as I am concerned, many of the issues that we see today destroying the country can be traced DIRECTLY back to him and the rest of the “New Dealers”.

Not the least is the attitudes on display in the famous “Second Bill of Rights”.

If you’re an American citizen you are entitled to:

a heated kidney shaped pool,
a microwave oven—don’t watch the food cook,
a Dyna-Gym—I’ll personally demonstrate it in the privacy of your own home,
a king-size Titanic unsinkable Molly Brown waterbed with polybendum,
a foolproof plan and an airtight alibi,
real simulated Indian jewelry,
a Gucci shoetree,
a year’s supply of antibiotics,
a personally autographed picture of Randy Mantooth
and Bob Dylan’s new unlisted phone number,
a beautifully restored 3rd Reich swizzle stick,
Rosemary’s baby,
a dream date in kneepads with Paul Williams,
a new Matador, a new mastodon,
a Maverick, a Mustang, a Montego,
a Merc Montclair, a Mark IV, a meteor,
a Mercedes, an MG, or a Malibu,
a Mort Moriarty, a Maserati, a Mac truck,
a Mazda, a new Monza, or a moped,
a Winnebago—Hell, a herd of Winnebago’s we’re giving ‘em away,
or how about a McCulloch chainsaw,
a Las Vegas wedding,
a Mexican divorce,
a solid gold Kama Sutra coffee pot,
or a baby’s arm holding an apple?

Amen, MrB. And I'd include in that the government taking via taxes in order to give homes to those who won't work to acquire one of their own.
