Have you been living under a rock? Mexican family converts 131-foot stone in desert into a home

Most people think living under a rock is something to avoid.

But for one Mexican family, it's a dream come true. Farmer Benito Hernandez knew since the age of eight that he wanted to make a 131-foot rock formation in Coahuila, Mexico, his home.

It took him 20 years to buy the land but as soon as he was able, Hernandez and his wife Santa Martha constructed a sun-dried brick house beneath the awe-inspiring formation.

Located about 50 miles south of the U.S.-Mexico border near the remote community of San Jose de Piedras, the home is small.

But it was large enough for the couple to raise seven children over the 30 years they've inhabited the cave-like property.

'I started coming here when I was 8 years old to visit the Candelilla fields and I liked it here,' Hernandez said.

'I wasn't married and I didn't have a family yet, but I liked it and I had to keep coming to put my foot in because lands here are won through claiming them.'

Though Hernandez installed a wood-burning stove, electricity is unreliable in the dwelling, which in located in the arid desert.

That's the same kind of lawn chair used by the illegals in the section-8 housing in our city.

It would scare the heck out of me, but then, when you think of it, it’s no different from being on the ground floor of a skyscraper.

I know, couldn’t he have dragged that off just for the shot?

Must be amazing living under that rock. I’d love it.

Years ago I saw similar cave dwellings in the cliffs around Acapulco. It was quite a contrast with the mansions not far away.

It’s a home that would make Frank Lloyd Wright jealous.

Note the architectural style windows.

I live in Carefree, AZ. On Black Mountain, a lot of $10 mil+ homes look like this.

No, not kidding.

Living in AZ, a lot of us appreciate this stuff.

You bet — maybe someone from Window World will see this and bring them a couple of windows to make their lives a little easier.

Have you been following the drama of the FLW home that he built for his son...in Paradise Valley, AZ? Fascinating.

I grew up in this area, but never knew of the house. My husband and I heard it was up to be demolished and sneaked in to look (even though there was a guard...dumb of us...but a lot of architecture nuts were all doing the same...and the guard was kind...and I think given orders to be rational at us lookie-lou/student/FLW fan types).

The good news: This fantastic, odd little house, was bought by a wonderful person and donated to the FLW Society.

It really is a wonder....a small house on a barren 2 acre lot in a once lovely neighborhood...now turned into fancy-ville....But it has survived and I’m thrilled. I love it!

“Over-stuffed patio chaise-lounge”, not a lawn chair.

Go South of Moab, Utah and you will see a home blasted out of solid rock.

It is now a tourist attraction called HOLE IN THE ROCK.
