Imagine a vast registry that details every legal gun owner in the country, along with information about all of their firearms.
Now imagine the gun lobby not making a fuss about it.
Thats what has happened in Germany, where a new gun database went into service at the beginning of the year.
Until recently, some records were kept on index cards across what used to be 551 separate local registries. Now, law enforcement officials can sit down at their computers and scroll through lists of owners and their guns in seconds.
Hunting is popular in Germany, and gun manufacturers are plentiful and powerful. But the push toward increased regulation and oversight, spurred by a string of school shootings in recent years, has come with little opposition from gun groups. Many gun advocates say that if cars can be registered and regulated, so can weapons.

“Germany initiates gun registry”
Again?
Europeans are sheep.
I have had many discussions with Brits and Germans.
They do not understand the concept of freedom.
They honestly believe they are free.
In Europe everything is either required or prohibited.
Isn't that special?
“You notice that there are no brownshirts this time?”
This time, most of Europe will also be disarmed and the brownshirts will wear blue helmets. And the Jews are going to shoot back.
Germany- the land of liberty...not. No people on earth have ever submitted to authority more slavishly, save the Russians or the Chinese.
I’m actually surprised a bit by this article. I mean, yes, the tone is that gun owners in the US should be more like Germans and meekly go along with a gun registry. That’s no surprise of course.
But the last line in the article actually voices a common (and absolutely true) point made by opponents, that a registration will just make it easier for the government to eventually confiscate.
Usually ‘journalists’ end articles like this by giving the last word to the liberals point of view.
A lot of Germans are not registering their weapons at all. That is a fact.
Mostly the old people who are going to die soon anyway and "unwanted" children who somehow manage to live through an abortion.
This is another liberal tactic....confuse the issue.
Firearms are not used in the vast majority of violent crimes. But by comparing the number of violent crimes committed with guns, the numbers make it look like we have a serious problem.
The truth is that violent crime rates in Germany are far higher than they are in the US.....they just don't use firearms as frequently.
In Chicago, there are 500 deaths by firearms, but over 10,000 violent crimes total.
Don't let the issue be clouded.
