VITAMIN C, TITRATING TO BOWEL TOLERANCE, ANASCORBEMIA, AND ACUTE INDUCED SCURVY

From the article:
“ABSTRACT
A method of utilizing vitamin C in amounts just short of the doses which produce diarrhea is described (TITRATING TO BOWEL TOLERANCE). The amount of oral ascorbic acid tolerated by a patient without producing diarrhea increases somewhat proportionately to the stress or toxicity of his disease. Bowel tolerance doses of ascorbic acid ameliorate the acute symptoms of many diseases. Lesser doses often have little effect on acute symptoms but assist the body in handling the stress of disease and may reduce the morbidity of the disease. However, if doses of ascorbate are not provided to satisfy this potential draw on the nutrient, first local tissues involved in the disease, then the blood, and then the body in general become deplete of ascorbate (ANASCORBEMIA and ACUTE INDUCED SCURVY). The patient is thereby put at risk for complications of metabolic processes known to be dependent upon ascorbate.”
I don’t listen to Savage, but am generally interested in vitamin regimes. My comment on skimming that article is:
WOW! That’s a lot of vitamin C!
I was feeling cruddy Friday night when I heard Savage’s show.
Saturday, based on this abstract, I took four doses of vitamin C at a strength of 10,000 mg (10.0 gram) doses over a four hour time interval.
Yes, I got a little gassy, but I felt much better by Saturday afternoon, thank you very much!!!
bfl
Yep. Yep. Yep.
See my post above.
In the past, I thought that “a lot” of vitamin C would be a single dose of about 4,000 mg.
Last weekend, I took 40,000 mg over four hours.
It was worth it.
Have the kidney stones hit yet?
I always tell everyone Orange Juice is the universal cure-all
Lately TUMERIC has gotten my attention. I ate something heavily seasoned with tumeric and the next day I did not need my reading glasses... looking into taking it in capsule form- will report back later.
I have learned this about my chewable Vitamin C tablets (Which I DON’T take very often):
If I bite my lip, within 24 hours I will nearly ALWAYS get a very painful canker sore...
If, when I bite my lip, I immediately go take a Vitamin C tablet... and preferably one more the next day, I NEVER get a canker sore... My lip heals painlessly.
It’s never failed me... and, this USED To be a pretty common problem for me.
So... I no longer believe those who say oral vitamins DON’T make ANY difference.
In the early 80’s I worked in Palo Alto and met a man who had know Linus Pauling. He convinced me that vitamin C had great potential in fighting all sorts of ailments and in jump starting the immune system. I began taking consistent doses every day and large doses when I feel sickness coming on. I’ve been doing it ever since and have experienced constant good health. Although my old knees ache on occasion, I can’t remember being sick and I take no prescription meds of any kind for any reason.
The dosage was: Buy the largest bottle of 1000 mg Vitamin C I could find and a half gallon of OJ. Take 10,000mg all at once with OJ, then take 1,000mg every hr after that untill the bottle is gone...I never did see a Dr.
Basically what the article says is that the sicker you are, the more vitamin C you can take without getting the hershey squirts.
If I took that much I would die of a poop hemorrhage.
I did that only once last weekend.
So, no.
Is there a connection?

Turmeric is a very good anti-inflammatory. A friend of mine with MS takes it all the time. I started taking it for my Colitis and it seems to be helping somewhat. There are studies where in higher doses it has put Colitis into remission.
