Hong Kong action hero Jackie Chan has once again provoked criticism, this time from an American blogger, after suggesting on Chinese television that the US is the "most corrupt" country in the world.
"When you talk about corruption -- the whole world, is there corruption in the United States? The most corrupt in the world!" the Rush Hour star, who has made headlines recently for his controversial views, told Phoenix TV last month.
Chan reaffirmed his view after the show's host questioned him -- "Of course! Where did the great breakdown come from? The world, the United States started it," Chan said, referring to the financial crisis and gesticulating as he spoke.
His comments were rebuked Thursday by Max Fisher, a foreign affairs blogger for the Washington Post, who called them "anti-American" rhetoric that was rooted in China's insecurity.
"To the degree that Chan's comments were anti-American, they likewise reflect a common Chinese view of the United States, one that is rooted not just in attitudes toward America but in China's proud but sometimes insecure view of itself," Fisher said.
Jackie Chan also said China is a relatively young country, where in the first half of its history it was "bullied by so many people", and that it only achieved "real success" in the past decade.
"Our country's leaders admit they are corrupted, etcetera. We are improving -- I can see our country is constantly improving and learning," he said, adding that everyone is making an issue out of China because it is "powerful" now.
Chan, who is known for his martial arts skills and daring stunt work, sparked criticism in Hong Kong, which was returned to China in 1997, after he reportedly told a Chinese magazine last December that protest in the city should be restricted.

Hey Jackie, go on Chinese TV and criticize the govt and lets see how long it is before you disappear.
The reality is, American media has been and is getting to be the most corrupt in the world. Our government information and news is fully controlled by the Obama government. Benghazi is the most corrupt coverup of an event in this country, and everyone knows it. The POTUS literally defies we the people by ignoring our representatives. Yes Chan might have a point.

Good point. Over 4 trillion in corruption in less than 4 years makes everything else in history look like tiddlywinks. Though, Jackie still needs to turn his focus on his own country and work on eradicating the communist dictatorial posture of his rulers and leave us to do the same for ourselves.

We might define this as retail vs. wholesale corruption.
There is remarkably little retail corruption here, in most states. Wholesale institutional corruption is epidemic, largely because those participating in it are able to rationalize it as not “really” being corruption.
How ironical that a Chinese guy says America is more corrupt. From what I read about Google’s dealings with the Chinese government, China is VERY corrupt and it is merely accepted as “normal.”
Well, there ya have it!
If it is described as “normal” then it ain’t “corrupt”, therefore, China has NO corruption!

First snd foremost, there’s corruption in every nation but its more widely reported here because of the 1st Amendment. You think the warlords and chieftains in Africa would let them report corruption? No. They’d shoot them dead in their tracks. Ad to that they don’t have the type funding to setup TV stations capable of worldwide news in many of those backward countries because the tyrants that exploit their people and horde the wealth.
So no Jackie although we do have corruption I highly doubt we have more than China which has a vastly higher population. We just report it more because we are allowed to unlike your country where censorship keeps it out if the news. Stick to making movies and stay out if politics. It’s not your forte. But I do enjoy your movies....

I agree with you about Jackie Chan. My post to Bryanw92 in post #43 was our talk about Star Trek.
But when you consider the confiscation of 4 trillion dollars from all 50 states in less the 4 years, which will destroy me and my children's future property and prosperity, abortion on demand, the current movement to grab the guns, localized legalization of mind numbing drugs, wholesale academic perversion, federal take overs of industry and medicine...
We have become a country of good is bad and bad is good. Sad direction.

Well, many of us citizens have a positive view of America's role in the world that is not shared by the world.
Conservatives often live in a bubble of WWII-inspired patriotism that blinds us to the ineffectiveness and even mendacity of US Government actions throughout the world before and since. Just as liberals live in a bubble of welfare-state emotionalism that blinds them to the evils empowered governments inevitably commit. It's always valuable to try to see ourselves as others see us, even if we don't like the way we look. :)
Maybe Jackie has spent too much time in DC and Hollyweird.
Corruption is the natural product of a mixed economy with its pragmatism, political eclecticism, and pressure group warfare and special interest group warfare.
Yes, we do it backwards. Other countries get somewhat less corrupt at higher levels of government - this is why Chinese people like Jackie Chan generally support the CCP and hate their local town mayors and police chiefs. Our Presidency and Senate are wholly owned subsidiaries of the central bankers, and the House and Supreme Court are leaning in that direction, even while many communities retain fine public servants at local levels and continue to provide a reasonable facsimile of "real America" to live in.
Of course, compare local life in Mexico or China to local life in Detroit or Washington, DC and suddenly those other nations don't look quite so bad...
