I wrote a short blurb for the Seattle Chamber Music Society on Ginastera and his music.

"Toccata" was Carl's drum solo on the Brain Salad Surgery tour in '73 and '74. He commissioned British Steel to design a custom stainless steel drum kit using one-quarter-inch thick shells and brass fittings. He had a jeweler engrave the shells with various animals and vignettes. The kit, along with tympani, orchestra chimes and two massive gongs were on a rotating platform supported by a steel pagoda-like tripod. There was nothing else like it in the world and cost several million dollars. Carl's complete rig had a total weight of 2.5 tons and many of the stages on tour had to be reinforced, with some venues actually cancelling shows because of it. The kit was the first of it's kind to be electronically designed to trigger Moog synthesizers which were in their infancy. One particularly stunning visual effect was achieved when the rostrum rotated revealing the back side of the gongs were painted with day-glow dragons which under black light literally danced when the huge discs commenced to vibrating.

I have to bow down to people like that. It's what separates real musicians from the posers.

Just got in from parental errands, the chiropractor, library day of large print books for my folks, and a haircut (scheduled for Wednesday evening) as my haircutter called, as I was headed to the library, to ask if I could come in “now” as she had to leave Sunday for Oklahoma as her Dad is in the hospital with pneumonia. Timing was good. I don’t have to go out tomorrow, thank goodness, as it has already started to sprinkle. They say 40 degrees tomorrow and rain. *sigh*

I understand. Carl Palmer was classically trained as I was. He reads music, is firmly based academically in all aspects of classical music theory and unlike most rock and jazz drummers, he is technically correct in every application. He is one of the only rock drummers who sought and won the friendship and respect of Buddy Rich during his lifetime, although many pay him homage today. Carl and Buddy used to hang out and Carl considered Buddy a mentor.

On one level, Carl Palmer is a flawless drumming machine, yet, he instills a warmth and humanity to each of his projects that no machine could duplicate. He has been and continues to be an innovator and inventor, taking the craft of rock drumming into the realm of true art and displays all the traits of the great musicians including endurance, balance, dynamics, control, integrity and showmanship. He understands and employs the technique of stating a theme, performing variations and then restating the theme. His influence on two generations of percussionists is often underrated due largely to the flamboyance, egos and outrageousness of his rock peers, but in fact, he has few peers and has cast a legacy that will endure and be both studied and marveled at for generations.
