White House may consider funding for police in schools after Newtown

By Philip Rucker, Published: January 10

The Obama administration is considering funding many more police officers in public schools to secure campuses, a leading Democratic senator said, part of a broad gun violence agenda that is likely to include a ban on high-capacity ammunition clips and universal background checks.

The school safety initiative, one of several under consideration, would make federal dollars available to schools that want to hire police officers and install surveillance equipment, although it is not nearly as far-ranging as the National Rifle Association’s proposal for armed guards in every U.S. school.

The idea is gaining currency among some Democratic lawmakers, who see it as a potential area of common ground with Republicans who otherwise oppose stricter restrictions on firearms. Sen. Barbara Boxer, a liberal Democrat from California, said she presented the plan to Vice President Biden and that he was “very, very interested” and may include it in the policy recommendations he makes to President Obama.

“If a school district wants to have a community policing presence, I think it’s very important they have it,” Boxer said in an interview Thursday. “If they want uniformed officers, they can do it. If they want plainclothed officers, they can do it.”

“Wonder what they’ll do with all those “Gun-Free Zone” signs after they’re taken down?”

Put them up at Starbucks.

I think school districts should make the decision if they want police or private security, if they want armed teachers, etc. I think arming teachers should be on a volunteer basis. It’s got to be people who will use the gun if necessary. Not everybody is suited for that.

Personally I can’t think of better security personnel than janitors. They’re generally unobtrusive and they know their way around the school without being tied to one spot.

This “protection” will be bean bag rounds or spitwads.

The real stuff is reserved for protecting the ‘important’ people in D.C.

Beware of the strings that will be attached to any funding from Mordor-on-the-Potomac.

Got that right. Get rid of those stupid signs and let the school districts/teachers do as they wish.

Not the Fed. Gov’t.

State, or local, but not the Fed.

The last thing we want is to expand the Federal Government into our State, and local business.

The Lefts goal is Centralized government subjecting the citizens to their control. That isn’t what this country is about.

Janitors too. All teachers should have some type of rapid communication device on their person (cell phone, radio, etc) Classrooms need to have doors with locks and security glass panes. Teacher keeps the key around their neck. That’s how my gradeschool classrooms were.

When I read it, my first thought was Unions. A few thousand more patrons for the Democrats.

I agree, but if something goes bad, we may not be able to blame the liberals for it...

Would those volunteers be liable if something bad happens?

The Feds couldn’t just encourage local communities to come up with innovative way to protect students, ie arm willing teachers or administrators, turn to volunteers, etc.

Would’nt cost the taxpayer that way.

It’s going to cost us in some form of taxes no matter which govt entity supplies guards.

If there aren’t guards, then it will be bans of guns and such...of course those wouldn’t cost us anything in taxes.

We may get that option...pay for guards through increased taxes or turn in your guns.

Blaming liberals is hardly a basis for making a wise decision to eliminate their influence from the system.

No way should this be handled by the Federal Government. They will just screw it up like all the other shiite they touch.

State control with county/city management only.

There are 31 public schools in my county of about 70,000 residents, serving 11,594 students. In addition, there are 7 private schools.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, there were 98,817 public schools in the 50 states during the 2009-2010 school year. This doesn’t count private schools and I don’t know if it counts preschools.

It would take an army to place a single guard at each school. It is an impossible dream.

I believe that if school security is the goal, the better bet would be to harden each school and cause the schools to provide their own security..... of course, local taxes will be over the top.

Resolving local school problems should be the responsibility of the local schools and the community, not the federal government.
