White House may consider funding for police in schools after Newtown
By Philip Rucker, Published: January 10
The Obama administration is considering funding many more police officers in public schools to secure campuses, a leading Democratic senator said, part of a broad gun violence agenda that is likely to include a ban on high-capacity ammunition clips and universal background checks.
The school safety initiative, one of several under consideration, would make federal dollars available to schools that want to hire police officers and install surveillance equipment, although it is not nearly as far-ranging as the National Rifle Associations proposal for armed guards in every U.S. school.
The idea is gaining currency among some Democratic lawmakers, who see it as a potential area of common ground with Republicans who otherwise oppose stricter restrictions on firearms. Sen. Barbara Boxer, a liberal Democrat from California, said she presented the plan to Vice President Biden and that he was very, very interested and may include it in the policy recommendations he makes to President Obama.
If a school district wants to have a community policing presence, I think its very important they have it, Boxer said in an interview Thursday. If they want uniformed officers, they can do it. If they want plainclothed officers, they can do it.

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."" -- Thomas Jefferson
In a country that regularly pisses through $$$1 Trillion a year and now wants to mint a fiat coin of platinum what’s $5 billion a year?
It’s for the children and only soulless bastuhds would object to protecting the children.
Yeah, I teach at a private adult vocational school and we have one of those stupid signs that advertise that NO ONE IN THIS BUILDING IS ARMED, SO YOU CAN COME IN A SHOOT AT RANDOM, AND NO ONE WILL BE ABLE TO STOP YOU . . . ya' know what I mean?
Would rather have a sign indicating that someone, somewhere in this building is armed and ready to use his weapon.
Whaddya think? Doncha just love the idea of a claque of Federal goons with the weapons to keep you from getting to your kids?
Wayne LaPierre, you suck, much.
Had the NRA suggested arming existing school personnel and offered free training, I'd have been all with them. At least those people are somewhat accountable to parents. It would have been a great opportunity to dispel a boatload of propaganda from the Marxist left. Nope, ol' Wayne wants yet ANOTHER unfunded retirement for his retired cop constituency.
Not the job of the federal government.
,,,,, GEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZ ,,,, there goes our “SAFE” ,, “gun free zone” around our public school indoctrination centers .
“Keep the Feds out of this, should be a state matter and even down to the county and school board level.”
I agree. Allow qualified volunteer citizens and/or qualified volunteer staff to perform security. Do not turn this important function over to the feds.
Why federal?
Each county in each state can organize a posse of volunteers - just ask Sheriff Arapi how to do it.
Any kind of protection for the schools has to be funded somehow, doesn’t it? If the govt does it, people will demand some form of over site, right?
I’ll save everyone the suspense.
They won’t propose this. They will propose limits on gun-clip, high capacity ammunition, high capacity bullets, high capacity gun magazines, banana clips, bullet holders, AK11, AK44, AK15, AR47, AR11, oh and the evil dreaded “barrel shroud”.
These are all the misstatements I’ve heard and read the past few weeks most of which came from elected officials.
Good idea, keep it in the state
The Feds MUST be kept out of this. It’s up to the states, counties, or municipalities to deal with this issue, either by keeping a policeman at the school, or allowing armed police to visit the school from time to time, or allowing certified teachers or guards to carry in the school, thus removing any crazy’s confidence that he will not encounter armed defenders.
We all know what happens when the federal government takes over paying the bills. More taxes, more control, less freedom.
And it points toward Obama’s dream: an armed government and disarmed citizens. Not to mention more public union supporters.
People keep talking about the actual event of shooting back at one of these nutjobs, etc. but what is overlooked repeatedly is the deterrent value of just having the possibility of armed 'resistors' in the schools. Your sign would be the way to go.
These shooters want to kill lots of people and make a 'statement', then they want to die on their own terms (suicide). They don't want to be wounded, taken alive to stand trial or end up in a mental ward. They want to die by their own hand, the ultimate 'control', and in their own minds as some sort of 'legend' with the publicity that attends such a reputation, even if it is the worst sort. Just having the possibility of someone who can shoot back and mess up their plans is a deterrent and they'll look for the softest target. As examples: Columbine - shooters committed suicide; Dunlane - shooter committed suicide; VT - shooter committed suicide when he heard the cops breaking in downstairs, Newtown - shooter committed suicide when he heard police sirens; recent mall event - shooter committed suicide when he saw a weapon present in the hands of a guy carrying concealed who didn't even have to fire a shot. Deterrence - it works (not always, but more often than "Gun Free Zone").
It has to have some govt funding, doesn’t it?
And I totally agree with you.
Anytime the Feds get involved you have strings attached.
The first thing they would do is stop the *qualified* part you mentioned.
Anything the Feds touch goes to crap and becomes a joke, quickly.
I know the sheriff in my parish (county) would be happy to train volunteers and deputize them.
