There will be a Jersey City police officer stationed at every City Council meeting until 30 minutes after it adjourns, thanks to a measure adopted by the council tonight.
The ordinance, a request of Councilwoman at large Viola Richardson, was adopted by an 8-1 vote, with only Ward E Councilman Steve Fulop voting against.
Richardson has told The Jersey Journal she doesnt want to wait until a tragedy occurs before the council decides it needs more protection. Though she first proposed the idea after the Dec. 14 Newtown school massacre, she said that was not the impetus for the plan.
Fulop said tonight he thinks stationing a police officer at the meeting would be overkill. City Hall has a security guard on duty during the meetings, and anyone who enters the Grove Street building has to walk through a metal detector first, he noted.
We dont need police here when people are getting shot in the streets every day, Fulop said.

Viola Richardson is just a fraidy cat.
The Council should just declare its meeting hall to be a Gun Free Zone!
Up until the 1980s...nobody ever went to town or city council meetings because they were just too boring. Since the 1980s...because of various budget battles, project battles, property taxation discussions, and TV cable carrying the activity to everyone’s living room....all city council meetings in the US have a wide audience.
From the town where I grew up (400 residents in Alabama)...a couple of years ago, they had a battle over the auxillry police squad, which hadn’t been authorized by the town council but had been put into place by the town’s police chief. For three or four meetings...attendance suddenly went from six people...up to sixty people, and a local TV station sent over a truck to cover this stuff.
Tempers would flare and people would openly make threats against their neighbors. Even with a cop or two in the room....things were fairly tense.
Armed guards can be found at banks, too. Maybe the government can treasure children the same way.

This is called “prepping the battlefield”. Eventually, the laws they pass will be so unpopular they’ll need a military presence at every meeting to keep the people from tarring and feathering the city council members.
Actually, I’d like to see this happen everywhere in the country. Detail the police officers to protect every government office, facility, asset - everywhere.
It’s not like they stop much crime before or in the midst of being executed. At least, then, we could travel on the expressways and highways without having to look out for “revenuers”...
NJ is just another American communist enclave.

Then the Council should follow Post #3
When wannabe gods and petty tyrants wish to intrude into every corner of the citizeny’s lives, yeah...things CAN get tense...and rightfully so. It’s not as if they were forcibly drafted to be Council members. These jobs are taken for the power they hold and as stepping stones to jobs with even MORE power to control the lives of others and for the lucre that stems from that power.
I for one, ABSOLUTELY want government to fear the people!
So the Council critters are determined to protect themselves, but protecting the citizens’ kids at school is a taboo. Typical liberal hypocrisy and selfishness.
What could possibly go wrong?
she wants armed guards protecting her but doesn’t think people should be allowed to arm to protect themselves
