A self-described 'spiritual guru' has sparked outrage in India after saying that the 23-year-old rape victim who died after being assaulted by six men was partly responsible for her own attack.
Asaram Bapu said that Jyoti Singh Pandey, whose fate has drawn the sympathy of the world and been treated as a national tragedy within India, was 'as guilty as her rapists'.
He added that she should have been more friendly to her attackers if she wanted to preserve her own life.
Politicians and web users have reacted with fury to the 71-year-old guru's comments.
Asaram Bapu's controversial intervention in the case comes on the day that five of Jyoti's six alleged attackers appeared in court to face charges of murder, rape and abduction.
A judge ordered that the courtroom should be closed to the public after more than 150 people tried to cram in to a room designed for around 30 during the suspects' initial hearing.
'Only five to six people are not the culprits,' Asaram Bapu said. 'The victim is as guilty as her rapists. 'She should have called the culprits brothers and begged before them to stop.'
He added: 'This could have saved her dignity and life. Can one hand clap? I don't think so.'
Leading political figures were quick to condemn the inflammatory comments, which one opposition politician called 'regrettable, deeply disturbing and painful'.
Sandeep Dikshit, from the ruling Congress party, said, 'Such comments should be condemned as much as possible,' while his colleague Rashid Alvi added that religious figures should 'give serious thought' before commenting on public affairs.

The hatred and sickness of old men like this really astounds me. His following there in India must be just like that of “The Barack” here in what we used to call America.
Can one hand kill? It most certainly can.
PPS....maybe somebody will put a bullet where that little red dot on his forehead is.
You don’t reason with animals, Guru.
‘She should have called the culprits brothers and begged before them to stop.’ He added: ‘This could have saved her dignity and life.
Before or after they’d bashed her in the head?
He’s not very bright is he?
More 7th century evil. This moron should be made an example of and ripped to pieced by the decent people of India.
“Spiritual guru” spewing nonsense like that- has to be a liberal. Liberals also shifted the blame of 9/11 onto the U.S., saying it was “our own fault for bullying the world” and all that. Sounds like almost exactly the same thing here.
Someone needs to tell him it’s not polite to point.
All religions are really the same religion expressed in different ways.
In Indian culture, especially traditional Indian culture, women are chattel. They’re property.
Don’t forget, Indians had the custom of sati (or suttee) wherein the widow of the dearly departed would immolate herself on her husband’s funeral pyre. While she was alive.
Because widows are considered bad luck. Women in general are considered bad luck in traditional Hindu culture. Female infanticide is widespread. And rape is a major problem, and viewed by more traditionally-minded folks (such as the guru here) as essentially crime....because women really aren’t human.
That’s the mentality you’re looking at. Extremely patriarchal and deeply provincial.
Oops. Meant to say, “rape.......is viewed as essentially a non-criminal act.....because women really aren’t human.”
Fingers typing too fast. Sorry about that.
If I were this woman’s father and I had a.......well, you know what I’d do. This ‘guru’ has outlived his time.
He added that she should have been more friendly to her attackers if she wanted to preserve her own life.

Yes 6 friendly bullets would have been the reasonable response...
These people are the reason genocide was invented for.
He looks, sounds and dresses like Reverend Wright with a bit more cream in his coffee.
That’s a load of crock. Did you read the part where it said people were outraged by what this guy said?
