A task force led by vice-president Joe Biden is reportedly considering wide-ranging proposals going well beyond simply reinstating a ban on assault weapons and high capacity ammunition.
The Washington Post reports that a national data base tracking gun sales, mental health checks, and background checks are all on the table.
And in a move that is set to anger opponents of gun control, the taskforce is reportedly looking at measures that can be implemented by the president's order without the approval of Congress.
The White House is understood to want swift action while the public remains outraged over the deaths of 20 children and six adults in the Newtown school shooting in Connecticut last month.
Some reports suggest Mr Obama will have the proposals on his table within weeks.
Democrat congressman Chris Van Hollen says any approach the Obama administration takes must be comprehensive.
"The argument against gun safety provisions is always because it doesn't solve everything we shouldn't do anything and I don't subscribe to that," he said.
"I believe we need a comprehensive approach, we need to look at all the different elements here and just because a particular effort won't prevent something in one particular incident, doesn't mean you shouldn't do anything that might help in other incidents.
"Right now you can be on the terrorist watch list, you can be prevented from boarding an aeroplane, but you can go down the street and buy a semiautomatic assault weapon."
With the new Congress sworn in just days ago, 10 different bills are already on the table dealing with gun laws separate to Mr Obama's working group.

What about a convicted felon (certain elements are required) to buy a cap and ball musket - still a firearm - still able to kill a person???
What about all the drunk drivers that result in the deaths of 16,000 + or - each year in the US???
I’m outraged that the schools in the US don’t allow trained and cleared personnel that either want to volunteer (parents, retired police officers, etc) show up and be there to counter an active shooter...
I’m outraged that schools don’t allow trained and certified teachers/principals to carry or have access to lock boxes that contain a firearm to suppress and counter an active shooter...
But oh no....let’s just tramp on the 2nd Amendment - use this crisis to take away more freedoms - but let’s open the flood gates on abortion - alcohol abuse - legal marijuana usage that will results in more vehicle deaths and other criminal activity — but not allow FREE US CITIZENS the right to protect and defend their property and families from criminals because the govt. is broke both federal and local - and the police agencies are overworked - under staffed - and unwilling to be proactive to due the stupid lawsuits that liberal minded idiots employ to get out of criminal charges they know very well that they committed...
But no - I have to be legal - upstanding - can’t break the law - so turn over your weapons - forgo the amount of money I spent on it — just so a school shooting won’t happen again — and pay no attention to the thousands of illegals entering the country with who knows what in their backpacks...

I don’t think he has the balls to executive order this one and if he does cross that line, we’ll just disregard it and undo it when he and his ferry band of democrats suffer epic backlash in 2014 and 2016. Obama has been gun salesman of the year for the past 4 years running. If he EO’s some bull***t, he’ll be Republican recruiter of the year for the next 4 years. Look at all the guns being sold in this country, all to registered voters and not all of them are hard core conservatives-not by a long shot. Americans don’t have his back on this.

Congress does not have to allow executive orders to become law. There is a time period during which Congress can nullify executive orders, they just don’t bother most of the time.
This time their constituents would demand they nullify the order.

My guess is some sort of piecemeal response -- with tighter screens for criminal records and mental illness. (I've wondered if much of the libs opposition to firearms is because they can't legally own them because they can't pass mental illness background checks.)
