Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) criticizes Congress for not hastily appropriating federal money for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts in New York and New Jersey while praising a more prompt response to Hurricane Katrina.
REID: It's too bad that it's taking so long. When we had that devastating [Hurricane] Katrina, we were there within days taking care of Mississippi, Alabama, and especially Louisiana -- within days. We are now past two months with people of New York and the people of New Orleans and that area, they were hurt but nothing in comparison to what happened to the people in New England.
A million people lost their homes. A million people lost their homes. That's homes, that's not people in those homes. So, I think it's just really unfortunate that we don't have the relief for New York and New Jersey and the rest of New England already. It has to be done. We have to meet the needs of the American people when an act of God occurs. (U.S. Senate floor, January 4, 2013)

Katrina was a Cat 3 when it hit.
Wind speed doesn't really give you an idea of the total power of a hurricane ~ size counts!
What the heck is Harry Reid talking about???
Democrats lambasted Bush for an allegedly shoddy response to Katrina. Now he’s saying that the response to Katrina was first rate???? What the heck????
Is Harry Reid bashing his own Democrat president here, as contrasted with the evil Republican Bush????
What the heck?????
A million people lost their homes.
How many had insurance? If they didnt have insurance why should we pay? If they did, why should we pay?
How many were vacation homes?
Alzheimer’s.
“Wind speed doesn’t really give you an idea of the total power of a hurricane ~ size counts! “
lol, wow
Perhaps if these people who lived on the beach had maintained their homes to hurricane standards they wouldn’t have had so much trouble.
I love it when Midwesterners get involved in hurricane discussions. “Oh, I posted pictures!”
Blah, blah.
Pushing a cat 5 storm surge
I believe the issue with Sandy was the temperature differential. That’s why it was a problem.
Over 1,000 people died in Katrina, compared to 100+ in Sandy. I’ve no doubt houses count for more in Dingy Harry’s mind.
“I believe the issue with Sandy was the temperature differential”
Whats a “temperature differential”? I live in Florida and have been through several storms much stronger and bigger than Sandy and have never heard of this.
Uhhh... when a storm is weaker it’s usually wider and longer. Heck, I think everyone in Louisiana would have loved to have gotten hit by a Sandy-like storm. The damage would have been far milder than Katrina.
Obama hates white people,,,,
The States on the Gulf (with the exception of Lousianna) take care of the repairs and then get reimbursed by the government. Housing for the poor...that is not going to be rebuilt for years. It has to go through HUD, local and state government committees. It can not be rebuilt in the latest flood zones, so it may never be rebuilt.
People who had flood insurance and who want to repair or replace their structures work with insurance companies who represent FEMA to give damage estimates and get re-imbursment payments. If you don’t have the money to begin repairs, you will wait a few months for FEMA to process the claim and give you a check. But the check is made out to you and the lender (bank) so you have to work with the bank to get your money. They dish it out as you make repairs...inspecting repairs/building as you go along to release payments to you. Some people have to use the money they get for the furnishings from FEMA to front the money for building repairs. In the meantime, the State and cities work on making repairs to utilities, gov. buildings, roads and systems that were wrecked and managing trash.
It’s not “fast” coming back anywhere from a hurricane. It’s really hard for people. They have to get a place that is safe to live while the work goes on. That is what is miserable in New York and New Jersey. There is not a lot of places to rent while you wait through rebuilding like there is on the Gulf. Also, a lot people in the Northeastern cities don’t have cars which limits their opportunity to recover.
If I lived in the sandy disaster area and was not wealthy enough to fix my property myself, I would exit the disaster zone for good. Set up a new life somewhere else.
No, he is blasting Congress, which during this administration just means the house of representatives. In other words, Republicans. He is saying republicans killed as many Louisianans as possible, and are now trying to do the same thing in the Northeast. Just more fear porn for the low information people out there.
If people had flood insurance, we have to pay. I learned something about insurance I didn't know. If you have insurance on your house/goods with a private insurance company for wind damage, your private insurance company pays you very soon so you can rebuild.
However, the only way you can have FLOOD insurance is through FEDERAL FLOOD INSURANCE. No private company can offer flood insurance. That part I knew, however, the part I didn't know, is, YOU WILL NOT GET YOUR FLOOD INSURANCE MONEY UNTIL THE CONGRESS APPROPRIATES THE MONEY! If you have been paying for flood insurance for twenty years, you still cannot get any money to rebuild UNTIL THE CONGRESS APPROPRIATES THE MONEY.
The money you have been paying for flood insurance evidently goes in a black hole and the government spends that money. You can't get one penny until congress appropriates the money. If they don't, sorry, you don't get your insurance money to rebuild.
if sandy had hit, say, alabama, the nightly news broadcast would have been . . .
“a serious rainstorm named sandy hits alabama. rednecks get wet. in other news, malia obama’s dog coughed up a hairball”
