Former criminals have one thing to say about the Journal News posting a detailed map of gun owners in New York State: criminals are thanking you for the help.
Reformed crooks say the New York newspaper that published a map of names and addresses of gun owners did a great service to their old cronies in the burglary trade.
The information published online by the Journal-News, a daily paper serving the New York suburbs of Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, could be highly useful to thieves in two ways, former burglars told FoxNews.com. Crooks looking to avoid getting shot now know which targets are soft and those who need weapons know where they can steal them.
"What they did was insanity," added Shaw, author of "License to Steal," a book about his criminal career.
Meanwhile in another county with gun owners being targeted by the Journal News, public officials are fighting back, saying the newspaper's efforts only invite more crime.
The defiant New York county clerk who has refused to hand over names and addresses of handgun permit holders to a newspaper that has stirred controversy by publishing the public information is standing firm, saying it's a matter of safety.
"This certainly puts my public in danger," Putnam County Clerk Dennis Sant said in reiterating his stance against the Journal News, a daily paper that serves the New York City suburbs of Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties.
Assemblyman Steve Katz backed Sant, saying the newspaper had exposed the names of those who own guns for no good reason, and said the decision could put people at risk.
The Journal News has really come up with the perfect map for the perpetrators and for the stalkers and for the criminals, Katz said. They have yet to give us a cogent reason why, except for the reason that they can. I am sorry that is not acceptable.
One gun stolen from any listed house used in a crime, and the paper is toast.
Gun crusaders seeking to end gun violence end up becoming an enabler of more gun violence on unarmed citizens.
Yeah, that pretty much sums up liberal thinkers in action.
” - - - and the paper is toast. “
Yup. Aiding and abetting a criminal.
Wait a minute. You guys think criminals are going to rob houses of owners they KNOW are armed?
I’m more worried about government agents going to these houses to collect the guns.
Maybe the idiots in this “paper” will next post not only the names/addressed of gun holders, but also the type and size of gun at that address.
It would be of great assistance to the “gun seeker” in his “shopping trip” for just the right thing.
Big time /s, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all.
Every leftist communist piece of S$% in this country to drop dead tommorow and i could care less at this point.
When those owners aren't home, sure.
since abortions are legal and to celebrated(sarc) by the media, shouldnt those who exercised that right be published too? Especially if we are paying for them now?
Yep. If I were much younger and criminally inclined, I'd watch the gun owners' homes during the day and, while the occupants are all at work, rob them for the guns. Then I could spend my nights using those guns to rob the homes of the non-gun owners.
government agents already knew where to go
The gubmint already has the addresses. They do not need Google Map to find them.
I doubt if you are a gun owner, especially a hand gun owner. Most hand gun owners I know, all rational, honest people, have their gun close to them at all times. They have bought them because of crime and for protection.
I think the writer means the newspaper had no good reason to publish the names, not the gun owners lacking cause to own firearms. Or maybe I'm mistaken.
Most gun owners I know have half a dozen firearms, including handguns, rifles, and shotguns -- it's not practical to have them all at hand at all times. Not everyone has a gun safe.
Liberal do-gooders will be the death of us.
That paper is behaving like a Nazi rag. Some legitimate retribution is in order.
The map tells them to avoid the homes while they're occupied, but remember, these are OWNERSHIP PERMITS, the vast majority of which are not allowed outside the house.
We don't know for sure if these are concealed carry, target (you're only allowed to take the handgun to a range, otherwise it MUST be kept at home), or ownership permit, which basically states that you take the gun home and it never leaves your home or business.
So if a burglar waits until the home is unoccupied, he stands a good chance of finding a handgun to steal.
Mark
No rational person who buys firearms for protection would have one. He can save himself the cost of a safe and the guns, and his life if they are NOT ready to use at a moment's notice.
Laws or no laws.
The Law IS a ass!
Phase 1: They are going to burglarize armed homes during the day, after seeing two adults leave for work.
Phase 2: They are going to rob unarmed homes, day or night, preferably while the homeowners are at home so they have a guide to the valuables.
