Politically the ties run a lot deeper as well because of the colonial era and trade. While the French and Germans were screaming about how Iraq was all about the oil, it was actually firms with names like “Fina” and “Total” that had all the big oil contracts in Iraq. From cars, generators, food products, weapons, refrigerators to light bulbs... this region by proximity and historical connections is closely tied to Europe.
