Princeton University Professor Dr. Cornel West appeared on the Tavis Smiley radio show on Thursday where he weighed in with his thoughts on how the media and lawmakers are responding to the tragic massacre of teachers and children in Newtown, Connecticut.
West expressed his frustration over how eagerly the media demanded a conversation about gun laws after Newtown, but seems unmoved by endemic gun violence in Americas cities where the victims are primarily minorities.
We cant just shed tears for those on the vanilla side of town, West said. They are precious, but they are no less or more precious than our poor brothers and sisters on Indian reservations who are killing each other or be they black or brown or what have you.
But its a good thing that we now have a discussion on gun control. We need one on drone control. Not a peep, not a mumbling word when black folk get shot, West added.
But now, Newtown, Connecticut, vanilla side low and behold we got a major conversation. Thats wonderful. Each life is precious, but it just upsets me when were so deferential.

Rest assured, asshat, when it comes to you, I'm not deferential at all.
Well, I never hear Cornell West talking about the culture of crime and death in the GET-TOE. If anything, he sweeps it under the rug.
Racist, lowlife, dirtbag asshole.
And if we demand more of law enforcement in certain communities this disgusting gutter trash would damn us for that too. Look no farther than your household mirror to see the real racist culprit here West.
I care a great deal about the death and destruction in areas you address here, you expletive deleted.
Those communities would be much better off if you and your ilk, fellow travelers were to have a fatal coronary this very night.
F this racist, poverty pimpin piece of crap. Oh, and Cornell too....
I admit it crossed my mind when this happened that would I have cried if it was black children murdered?
The fool wasn't listening to the thunderous roar of complaints about Trayvon getting shot? (Even though the punk deserved it.)
That might be because this was a mad man, killing out of the blue, not a career criminal who anyone could see was going to kill someone. Apples and oranges, professor.
These vicious racists would be permanently unemployed if they were lacking a little more melanin.
Actually, they probably are a little more precious in one area than the other if we measure by potential contribution to society. I’m sure you could use some sort of historical data and extrapolate into the likely future. I’m no college professor, though.
I wonder if Allen West was trying to bring the whole “Gun free Chicago” thing into the conversation....
So why isn’t he speaking out about his BROTHERS killing each other and innocent children in the hood. We can’t waist sympathy on some vanilla children (I never did see a racial breakdown of the victims, like it matters), but we certainly can’t have a dialogue on the black on black crime because that would call attention to it. Unlike this educated, racist, MORON, I don’t have to know the color of a child to grieve for it’s loss. Please tell me again how only WHITE people can be racist.
Dumb ass.
There is a difference. A big one. In the case of all those dead individuals (who happen to be black) the trigger is being pulled by...a person who rhymes with “trigger.”
We can’t go around illuminating black-on-black murder. It’s just not polite.
There's a difference between someone who kills because they're insane (and possibly born that way), and someone who kills because they're just plain mean because they were raised that way.
Is Mr. West ready to have that conversation, or does he just want to talk about the guns?
I admit it crossed my mind when this happened that would I have cried if it was black children murdered?

Were you horrified at Jonestown? They were all black too.
I would have, if I cried at all, which I didnt. Sad? Yes. Manipulated into crying by the media? No
So we can once again show why it hasn't, won't and never will work. Criminals are exactly that because they don't comply with society's values and laws. Passing more laws will not stop or deter criminals.
I once remember hearing a speech about content of character. I must have been dreaming.
The people in Jonestown went willingly. These children went to school one day and didn’t come home. I don’t remember crying over the Atlanta child murders, although I felt saddened by them.
I’m sure NPR/NYTimes will report this black hate speech. /not
