I just sat through a you tube, rap infested video of the 10 best guard dogs. Their #1 is the Caucasus Sheepdog (a very formidable beast). Number 6 was the Pit Bull - so much for the breed standard’s warning the dog should never be human aggressive.
They left off a bunch of the LGD’s of Eastern Europe in favor of mastiff type dogs. Heh, they’d be shocked if they try an Anatolian Shepherd or a Sharplaninatz
He isn’t. It’s his tribal African religion that permits it.
I’m thinking the PBs on there solely for the ‘intimidation factor’.
*Every* PB I’ve ever met was an initial barking “scary beast” who was on their back asking for belly skritches 5 minutes later.
I definitely would not consider them for my own ‘guard dog’ purposes.
[unless of course I was concerned about other dogs robbing me and then, I *might* consider them]
There’s tons of PBs in yards everywhere around here and frankly, they don’t impress me much as ‘guard dogs’ but then, I’m not phobic about the breed.
The CS and Anatolians are awesome dogs but not very practical *here* because of their scarcity.
[FWIW, I disregard any “rap infested” video out of hand..if that’s their soundtrack of choice, I can pretty much bet that very little of their ‘wisdom’ is useful]
In ScH and protection dog training, PBs are not the dogs of choice and more work goes into training them because they’re very much *not* ‘human aggressive’.
IMO, if you have to over-ride a dog’s natural instincts to -make- it a ‘guard dog’, you’re wasting time.
There’s a really good but unintentionally funny book that guarantees you can make an “attack dog” out of *any* breed...and they further prove it by training Poodles, Cockers and whatnot.
Sure, theoretically it *can* be done but who has that kind of time to waste?

She spent her formative years among Border Collies doing agility (she is in the same height class). So she loves to herd and is pretty good at it.
My daughter in law does Schutzen work, and the Choc observes with interest.
Which was a good thing, because when a rabid raccoon invaded our fenced back yard in the early morning (unbeknownst to me) and I let the dogs out to air, she got in front of the other two dogs and executed a perfect bark-and-hold from about 10 feet away.
She's my All Purpose Dog.

If I were a white South African I would try to get a dual citizenship in some other country in case I had to get out in a hurry. There are many expats today who have homes in other countries, that might be a good way for white South Africans to find another country.
