'A Christmas Story' It wouldn't be Christmas without 'A Christmas Story,' the 1983 movie that became an instant holiday classic thanks to its winning cast and quotable scenes. The film is as time-honored a tradition as getting your tongue stuck to a pole in freezing weather. Here's a then-and-now look at the gang from fictional Hohman, Indiana, who brought the 'original, traditional, one-hundred-percent, red-blooded, two-fisted, all-American Christmas' tale to life ...

I was a Jean Shepard fan for many years. Unfortunately, about a year before he died, Shepard did an interview with he Chicago Tribune where he revealed that he really disliked his childhood in NW Indiana, and never really cared about the childhood characters (Flick, Swartz, Bruner) he developed and used in his stories. It was a kick in the teeth for me and I can never look at his work the same again.

...the 1983 movie that became an instant holiday classic...

If memory serves, the movie was not all that popular when it first came out. It wasn't until a cable network began running it that it became so popular.

I love this movie! I personally think the seeds for National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation blossomed in A Christmas Story.

Of course I watched it again this year, and with my kids.
We were a bit surprised, for some reason, when the occasional profanity slipped out, even though one of the major memorable scenes revolved around the ‘f’ word.

I asked my daughter, after one of those profanities was uttered, if she heard the “bad word” that was said.
She said she couldn’t understand what the characters were saying.

It then occurred to me that throughout the show they use nonsense “profanity” out of the father & Ralphie, and mix in the occasional real profanity, and to a kid that doesn’t hear those words, it ALL sounds like nonsense words.

They'll mention one of the actor's foray into pornography, but won't mention Bob Clark was killed, and killed by an illegal alien.

There is another movie of an even greater vintage (1955) that I missed seeing this season. Anyone else remember “We’re No Angels”? It is a Humphrey Bogart movie for goodness sakes and a star cast on top of that with Peter Ustinov, Aldo Ray, Joan Bennett, Basil Rathbone, Leo G. Carroll AND directed by Michael Curtiz! With 500 channels, they can’t give us this good stuff?

TV Guide channel just aired a retrospective within the past couple weeks (probably repeated ad nauseam, and I don’t even know if it was original to this year).

Maybe you guys are missing it, but...

and actress playing the role of a traditional wife and mother is going to get about a 3 point boost on the “10” scale.

When I was a kid in the 60s, the rumor went through my school that Jean Shepherd had a son, his name supposedly was “Beaver”. This was something of a shock as it was never mentioned on the radio show, and the immediate assumption was he was born out of wedlock.

Turns out he did have a son in 1951 named Randall (the source for his brother’s name in the movie, perhaps), and that was by his first wife.

I was bothered by this, but I came to realize that the stories that he told really were fiction, though always with a basis in fact.

No one criticizes Mark Twain for fictionalizing his early life in “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”.

Public figures always have private lives, and they aren’t always what we would like them to be.

So, I eventually let all this slide because I enjoyed Shepherd’s work so much.
